If you watch the game on TV then you've financially helped the team. They have other revenue sources other than merchandise and ticket sales.

True, but IF i never watched, it would not affect that revenue at all.

Ratings. If enough people stop watching then revenue from advertisers will fall off. Yes, 1 person isn't enough to affect revenue in a measurable way, but you do help the ratings so you factor in to how much the companies will pay.
