I just got a letter from the state.

I had tried to cancel the insurance on one of my cars that I don't drive that just sits in the garage and was told by my old agent that in TX you have to have insurance on any car you own whether it is driven or not. In CA you could file for a 'non-operation' certificate so you didn't have to pay registration penalties or insurance on it. Anything like that here?

I love it! The agent who was going to lose a car off the policy claims it is illegal to cancel the insurance on that car.

I had this conversation last time I was in the Collin County Tag Office about the 2 vehicles in my garage that I do not drive. Both have expired tags and no insurance. Neither has seen the road in 4 years. She informed me that there is no penalty for the tags, just get insurance and a current tag before driving them and all would be fine.

No, she took it off since it wasnt going to moved off base,so she was told. I believe they told her that it would have 6 miles put on it by the time she returns. Dont know how thats possible. Ive informed her to find out whats going on. I just find it strange shes received this letter.

Probably received the letter because it is still registered but not insured. Not because somebody has taken it off base.

TexAssure is just a program for the state to verify coverage of the vehicles on the road. I'm guessing that they are just cross-referencing the insurance data base with registration.

Ok, cool. The last thing my sister needs is someone on the base taking a little ride. I guess i better update their records on the site since shes on active duty.

I'll bet it's due to that new state database that allows them to look up validity of insurance. Mostly meant to beat the people that take a policy and immediately cancel it just for the card, or fake cards. Goes to show that good ole slippery slope when giving the gov't any more power...

Got the same letter on my moms buick, which hasn't been on the road since 97 and a 94 Mark VIII that went to the crusher in 06.

I am now because I fixed the car and drive it. The guy gave me some bs about how if somebody magically got hurt by a car sitting on jackstands in my garage or it caught on fire that I could get in trouble for not having it insured and that homeowners insurance wouldn't cover it. At that time I just cancelled all my policies with them and went with juggz!

Am I the only one that think this is a great idea? I'm against 99% of any gov't idea to know something about me...but this one makes sense. They already know what kind of car you drive and whether or not its insured...it's why you got the letter. They're just giving you a chance to say why you don't before they mark you as someone who historically has not kept insurance. If you ever get pulled over in said Datsun...they look you up and have a good reason to ticket you now.

These bastards without insurance will go buy a 6 month policy, cancel it a day later, and keep the card on them. This gives the officer a "nice try" card. I say go for it. Every one of my buddies that gets in a wreck gets hit by an uninsured motorist texting while driving who flees the scene. Screw them!
