  • Qestion about a car shell...

Ok about 2 years ago i wrecked my mustang and had it fixed but was never really happy with the way the repair was done. So i was gonna get a new 99-04 shell and swap all of my existing parts i have now onto the new shell including my Vin. But i was told that swapping my existing vin onto the new shell is illegal. Is there any truth to that? because i have a 03 mach 1 so i have a particular vin number that i don't want to lose or what not. Thanks for any help.

    Thanks,
    Stephen

There is supposidly a leagal way to do it, but you have to go through the state and have a trooper oversee the actual VIN swap....at least that is what I've read about restoration type work....could be different on newer cars though.

Why would you want to go to the trouble in the first place?

because i hit a tree in the drivers door and messed up the floor pan and such. so now the door doesn't close easy anymore and the side skirts don't line up very well. its an ok repair but would like to have a perfect body car again.

Just do it if you don't EVER plan on selling the car, if u do and they find out then you will be in some serious shit

I think it's asinine to go to all that trouble, esp wanting to keep the VIN.

i think there are some vin numbers on the frame itself or something like that

Why not just swap all the Mach 1 shit over and set up agreed-value insurance on the new car? That way, if something happens to it, you get what you think it's worth.
