  • Even police say FTP every once in a while...

This is downright asinine. If you can't interact with the community, how can you build trust?

NYPD officers disciplined for throwing football with boyOfficers Catherine Guzman and Mariana Diaz face departmental trial for tossing a football with a child
    By PoliceOne Staff

NEW YORK — Two NYPD officers are challenging the disciplinary action taken against them for throwing a football with a child at a Bronx housing project.

Officers Catherine Guzman and Mariana Diaz say they were humiliated by the commanding officer of the Bronx Housing Bureau for playing the game last year on the Fourth of July, according to the New York Daily News.

"He was irate and berated us in front of everyone," Guzman said. "He said, 'What are you doing? Do you realize you are on overtime?'"

Four officers were involved in the incident, and two accepted a penalty of two vacation days, but Guzman and Diaz are appealing the ruling.

Charges against them say they "did fail and neglect to remain alert, to wit: throwing and catching a football with three uniformed members of service...while maintaining a foot post." Both will receive harsher penalties if found guilty.

Lawyer Eric Sanders said the NYPD needs to rethink how it defines community policing.

"I think the Police Department prefers its officers to be an occupying force rather than interacting with the community it serves," Sanders said.

"I don't think throwing a football to a 7-year-old boy is misconduct," Guzman said. "We were interacting with the community."

How can you write tickets and beat the homeless if you're throwing a football? Dang cops having a positive experience with pre-gangstas.

this is far too common of an attitude. Was watching the stupid gunsmith show Red Jacket when they were doing the suppressed Mark 19 greanade launcher...and they were wanting to sell it to the sheriffs department. wtf?

But then again, the police is not a proactive force, its reactive. Only way to be proactive is to oppress the population and control them from the outset.

I saw that too and was floored. When Will explained that they could now launch tear gas from 400 yards instead of 50, that was freaking rediculous.

Perfect way to make a non-lethal weapon completely lethal too.

This atricle is comletely asinine, completely reinforces the FTP mentality, and perpetuates the lack of respect for LEO. You gain respect by being human, not by brute force and having a robot-like demeanor.

Makes sense. Serious though this is pretty stupid. The charges should be dropped and the commanding officer should be smacked around for looking like a dumbass

Whatever happened to good ol' days when the local police were like Andy Griffith and an actual part of the community? I miss those days, and I am too young to have been around for them.

I do understand their concern about them being on overtime; budgets need to be watched, but throwing a football with kids should not be the complaint.

The focus should be on building ties with the community, not distancing yourself from it. When communities think that the officers have ownership of the area ( as in taking ownership and solving problems), they are more likely to have open dialogue and help the police solve community related issues.

I personally know 2 FWPD officers that have worked the same area for over 25 years, and people will tell these two officers anything. If I were to try to get info from them, they would not speak to me.

Exactly why there is so much of an FTP attitude out there. The police have been shifted from being a part of the community that stands up against the interlopers that cause trouble, to being viewed as the interlopers that cause trouble.
Community-based policing and positive and solid ties with the community needs to be encouraged, not punished.
I remember when I was a kid, frequently seeing the police patrolling the neighborhoods and when they would see us kids doing something good (which was actually most of the time), or if we gave them a tip on something bad going on, they would give us some cool decals or trading cards. Sadly, those days are long gone, for the most part.
"It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."
