  • Oversight Costs Forney ISD Millions

FORNEY (CBSDFW.COM) – Inaccurate growth projections will cost the Forney school district millions of dollars. The district now has to pay the state back more than $13 million because the funding formula Texas uses has been overestimating how many students were enrolled in Forney ISD.

New district Superintendent Michael Holland says, “Over the last few years before the recession Forney was one of the fastest growing cities in the state and they just left that historical growth for cities (formula) right at that same amount,” and he says that caused the amount the district owes to grow to $13.6 million.

    KRLD’s Matt Thomas Reports:

Holland, who brought in auditors that made the discovery, says now they’ve got a 5 year plan to pay the money back that includes identifying spending cuts on things like travel and possibly restructuring the duties of some district employees.

ouch...a friend has been their school board president for several years...i think he decided not to run for president this year, though, since his kids have graduated.

Call me crazy, but why not just count them.

Do you really need to estimate something like that?

I am trying to really understand whose fault it is. Is it the states for providing a bogus formula? Or is it the districts for not adjusting the formula.

i'm sure that they have to estimate the amount of students over a period of time. ie; how many students ill you have enrolled over the next 5-years (or whatever the period of time is). forney was blowing up with new neighborhoods popping up everywhere, but just like every other city in the world, that all slowed down for them as well.
