- Take examinations - 2 on the same day. The first was a situational and personality exam, the second was either a language aptitude test or spanish language test, depending if you spoke spanish or not.
- Physical - Full medical physical, including prostate exam. I heard Elvis applied 3 times just for that!
- Oral Interview - Sit before a board of 3-4 station commanders. They ask general interview typ questions then situational (like what would you do?)
- Background Check.

Of course my military experience made me qualified for a higher pay scale.
Retirement after 20 years. I would be 7 years away had I gone in. Of course, I would be 2 years away from military retirement had I stayed there too.
I was totally down for it but genetics precluded me.

Contrary to what most people believe, Border Patrol Agents make decent money in regards to where you live. There are veteran agents making 6 figures. I believe they cap at ~125k. Yes you will make ~35k the first year mainly because you will be at the academy for a couple of months. Once you are out you get AUO, overtime, holiday pay, night pay, etc. The big chunk is the AUO which is said to be 25% of your salary added to compensate for booking and other paperwork.
I tried out for the Border Patrol so I will give you my advice. From the day you first apply to the day you get called to ship to the academy it will be a VERY long, drawn out process. I was going on 2 yrs when I was told I failed the poly. And yes the probability of you taking one now is very high. US Customs intends to poly every applicant.
It's not for everyone. It does have a high turnover rate. It can be a big culture shock for some people going from a huge city to a small town near the border. It doesn't mean you will be stationed at the border either. They let you state a preference as to where you wish to be stationed, but at the end of the day, they put you where they need you. I have a couple of friends that are agents and they love it. Also thanks to the assholes that get popped taking bribes and betraying the trust they swore on, it is very hard to get on now.
Try Honorfirst.com if you wanna see what its all about. Just becareful how you talk in that forum as there are agents online and if you are serious about applying, they can break you.Last edited by 07Bluovl; 09-20-2011, 08:16 PM.2012 5.0 M6
