It's amazing what people will sacrifice for a couple of dollars. Amazing isn't the right word. Pathetic is.

And they don't seem to feel guilty about it at all! Seems like once they take advantage of that "friend", they just avoid him/her and move on to the next one.

Pathetic is definitely the right word.
