Obviously you should wear camo printed cargo shorts, flip flops and your "whoop there it is" t shirt you've been harboring since the early 90's.
      Boots and jeans /thread

Can I substitute the shirt for a Nike " Just do it" t shirt?

People have different ideas of what "khakis" are. To some they are thicker material, like jeans, just a shade of brown and to some they are more like tan colored dress pants.

If you're worried about looking like a bum why not split the difference and do jeans and a sportcoat?

Maybe. The message of the shirt may be too direct for the employer and could be misinterpeted as, once again, desperate. "Whoop there it is" or potential one of those clever "fbi - female body inspector" t shirts should do the trick. Gl

if the recruiter told you boots and jeans that means the interviewer told them to tell you that...following instructions is rule #1

Yep. If not, you might be perceived as the guy who will do things differently than he's told because he thinks his ideas are better than his superiors'.

Depends on the boots, really. I've got steel toe Red Wings that look just fine with khakis.

                            That's what I'd do.

Specific attire was suggested for your interview by the interviewer. You would be remiss to wear something else. It could come off as cocky, desperate, or even worse, unable to follow instructions. If they had not provided an appropriate dress code then I would definately agree with dressing up to the occasion. However in this case, since your prospective employer has suggested what they feel is appropriate you should follow it.

and btw, when your prospective boss tells you "You're welcome to xyz..." it's not an invitation or suggestion. It's a polite way of requiring xyz without coming off like demanding prick.
