  • Past electricity usage

Is there a way to find out how much electricity was used at a house in the past? We are looking at buying a home with vaulted ceilings and that is the only negative thing I see about the house.

If you know who their electric provider is then you can call them and ask. You just need the address.

I've done it before for a house I was looking renting and I did it again when we bought our house about 3 years ago.

If someone is still living in the house (not bank owned) then your realtor should be able to ask them for this information.

Yea, this is a bank owned house. I figured I can try TXU first, since they are the largest company I know. Then go from there.

Pay more attention to the age of the house, AC units, insulation in the attic (radiant barrier?) and windows. They affect consumption a lot more than vaulted ceilings do.

The back of the house is facing the West with a ton of windows and a sliding glass door on that side. None of them have solar screens or even blinds at the moment. I didn't get in the attic to check the insulation. Not sure how to see what size the AC unit is, other than the outside unit is pretty big. The house about 2200 sf.

since deregulation, it's very difficult to get this info. before, you could call txu and ask for that information...now, you'll need to have the person that the bill was sent to request that information.

Run from it. Find a north/south oriented home, preferably north. For future reference take the two left most numbers in the model number and divide by 12. That should be the tonnage of the unit.
