In this case it doesn't matter if it's a Pit or not. It could have been a huge, retarded Lab that wanted to smothering the baby licking it to death. The parents are still at fault for leaving the baby unattended. It just so happens it was a Pit allowed access to the baby and probably thought it was a noisy chew toy.
Regardless of breed, they are all still animals and can turn instinctively at any moment. The parents are at fault here for not protecting the baby and handling their animal properly.
