Hospital stay for newborn

We just spent 5 days in Baylor Grapevine.

I didn't pack enough clothes for me by a long shot.

Ol Lady didn't need clothes until the last 2 days so she was content.

I went home about mid week and grabbed some DVDs since our room had a player.

Both of our mothers stopped in and out (along with friends and other relatives for shorter times) which allowed me to run quick errands and get out into the sunlight.

I wasn't really bored all that often unless mom and baby were napping.

I barely slept in 5 days.

I brought my laptop but never got it out. I answered work emails from my phone.

BTW.. during the c-section you may see the doctors do some things that may cause you concern.
My wife had c-cections for both kids. I could only attend the second one. When I was led into the room my wife was already cut open. I could not look. I sat behind the sheet and witnessed two doctors basically pry my kid out. Even going so far as bracing their legs on the gurney. It was mortifying at first, but it was over before I knew it.

Same here. I saw things last week that I never want to see again. The happiest moment in my 29years was the end of that ordeal with a happy/healthy baby and mother.

Let her try. The hospital is geared to help you and the kiddo and you're paying for it! Abuse them! Once y'all are home, there's plenty of time to not get sleep.

Like I said, swallow some pride.

My son spent the first two nights in the nursery. (Which to this day she denies. I guess the drugs really do work)

LOL, get used to operating on no sleep for at least a couple of months.

The only thing I wasn't prepared for coming home was the change at home. I thought I was only coming home with one baby. I wasn't prepared for the baby, wife and the crazy reaction the dog had to the baby. Momma was dealing with her hormone changes, the dog wouldn't stop whining, crying and barking everytime the baby moved or made noise. We were all exhausted and dealing with the insanity. I was ready for one baby, not three. lol.

What's been said, except at night I'd recommend going home and sleeping in your own bed. Helluva lot more comfortable than any of the fold out contraptions the hospital will have. And tell your wife to swallow her pride and let the nurses help her at night with whatever. That's what you're paying them for. You'll be better off with a good night's sleep to tend to her needs the next day.

I like this train of thought if you can get away with it. You will need a tooth brush and razor if you do end up sleeping at the hospital. I was also mortified during my wifes C-section. Just look away if you can.

Ok, son is due on Wednesday, c-section, so I will be staying up there for several days till both mom and baby are ready for the ride home. What all should I bring or can I bring to the hospital to keep me occupied and such??? First time father...

we just did this about 6-weeks ago...bring your laptop, phone, etc. you'll be in the hospital for probably 3-days, including the day you go in. maybe longer, depending on how everything goes and what the doc decides. i can tell you that the first night with your newborn will be very quiet...don't get your hopes up, though...your newborn will be up quite a bit on the second night. we didn't send ours to the nursery (he never left our room), but you have that option if you want. congrats!!! it's definitely an amazing experience!

As I was told before we had our first baby...you go to the hospital as a couple and come back as a family. Quite the shift.

One thing I did to prep the dog was each night I went home I brought a blanket the baby was swaddled in and let the dog smell it. That way, once the baby was actually home, the dog was somewhat already used to it.

I wish I had done that, it was a LONG couple of weeks.

We have two dogs and each time I went home or one of our parents went to check on them they took an item back home that smelled like the baby.

My Dog is a Lab/Pit mix around 8 years old and he is doing great. He was always a quiet and calm dog so he is adjusting well. He follows momma around with the baby 24/7 but he followed her around the house before. He spends most of the day outside anyway.

Her Dog is the same mix about 2 years old and just plain sucks. He whined all the time before the baby. Its noticeably worse now. I don't trust him around the baby anyway because he snapped at momma's six year old niece. Luckily her parents love him and have already taken him home with them. They have acreage and he hasn't missed us yet.



Saying all that,

My dog is staying but he will not be left with an unattended baby for any reason. First sign of trouble and he has a green light to make a new home with my parents. We love both of our dogs but being a protective parent comes first.

It was a big shift for us too. I couldn't be happier even with the complete lack of sleep.

I've been through both a c section, and a vaginal birth. I'll take watching the c section any day of the week. Don't get me wrong, it's weird watching them slice her open, pull out all her innards, slap them down on her chest, then shovel them back in in no apparent order.



But when you see that kid come out of your honey hole, it changes you. And not really in a good way.
