It's not that it's so much "social time" as it is social development. It's subconsciously learning the subtleties of social interaction/communication.

In my life the homeschooled kids were always "off." Again, maybe homeschooling is like hair-plugs, bondo, fake-tits, you only notice it when it's done poorly.

All of the kids that I knew growing up that were home schooled were socially fucked up.

I can only go by my experience at public schools and that is that most of the teachers were not exactly great. Most were pretty bad. However there were some extremely notable exceptions. One was my AFJROTC instructor who had a positive life changing influence on my life. The other was my American History teacher in high school. I got a C- in her class but my love of American history began in her class room. She was pretty demanding. Hell, her son became an Astronaut.

That said, there is a good chance I'll put my future kid into public schools (at least initially). However I'll be monitoring it closely.

It depends on a lot of things as to whether it is good for your particular child or not.

There are plenty of parents who choose to "home school" kids just to isolate them and fill their heads with bullshit. There are others who do a job miles better than any public school could hope to do. There are so many factors that determine what the results are going to be that this is almost not worth discussing.

Myself, I spent a significant number of years in public schools, with most of that in a small town in Oklahoma. High school was public school in Texas. This was all long before "teaching to the test" became required. Still they taught me little about the important things in life. College was like a glass of cold ice water to the face. We wonder why people are idiots in this country and the schools certainly do their part to manufacture mouth breathers who don't have a clue and aren't ready for shit after they leave high school.

The funniest thing when I compare my school years to the present is the fact that in my school years I had no idea that my job even existed. That is how far in the dark I was about the world.

I really do owe a lot to the teachers for sitting down with me long enough to explain algebra at an early age.
And we're all so very proud of you for that!

Like I said before, there are some teachers that do good work, but if there is a possibility (and by my experience a large possibility) that the child will end up with a lazy fuck here and there, I'd rather take full responsibility for the education... at least until I find something/someone that can guarantee that it'll get done right.

See, us cavemen can't grasp the level of enlightenment you've achieved to get through a HS Calc class, so at that point, we would scrape up enough chickens and IOUs to get a private instructor for it.

Cool story and all but I'm wondering why I haven't yet heard the threesome story that includes the twin sister... I know that it can't be that the story doesn't exist, we all know that is preposterous.

Right. Which is why I'd put Leslie in the seat before 90% of Texas' finest. She might be blonde, but damn, she can get around a textbook of almost all various studies!

I had a fantastic one in junior high in Mansfield in about 1982. He was killed in a hit and run in Ft. Worth. I read about it in the newspaper. Story says a lot about the world we live in and the fucking shitbags who populate it.

                          Didnt read all the posts

Being a nontraditional student Ive got into several conversations with teachers in Jr College and College about homeschooling. One of the things that is often mentioned about home schooled students is their inability to handle social situations. Even in the simplest situations they cause issues such as interrupting class just for attention, or not understanding the concept of waiting in line.

The other problem that homeschooling presents is that parents are not trained teachers. This means that that they have a harder time teaching every subject because they aren't specialists on particular subjects (or any subject at all) and cant expand upon a concept that is not in the "teachers guide". The worst side of this is if the parent thinks something is "wrong" then they reinforce that in the kid instead of allowing the student to come to their own conclusion. Example teaching creationism because a religious leader has said evolution is plot by the atheists to discredit God

We are having him tested soon to see what exactly his "Label" will be as much as I hate to...He recently got in trouble at school for making a comment to a student that landed him in deep trouble at the age of 11...As a parent I can not allow this to happen so home schooling will be the answer for now...
Hopefully you figure out how to overcome this, rather than just putting him in a different environment to try and hide it.

hmmmm...take this for what its worth :

While i really admire those who want to actually get a good education for their children, rather than what can be a "crapshoot" out of the public education system, i strongly believe being thrown in a mix of people of various backgrounds (things you cant exactly get at a $40,000/year private high school) and learning in sequence how to cope, deal, and then thrive in such environments are key. I really have strong feelings against monogender schools. Sure, they have common planned social interactions between ABC All Girls School and XYZ All Boys School, but nothing dealing with the day-to-day interaction with the opposite sex.

The people who I see who come from supressed scholastic backgrounds tend to be very stunted in their social skills, and fail to move up to high positions in companies. Even MIT now is forcing their engineering majors and grad students to take upper-level social courses that essentially tell them how to deal with people, something they should have learned and developed at an early age, not at twenty-four!!

The best solution IMHO would be a public school mixed in with a private tutor to help accellerate growth, and at the high school level, take as many college-level courses as possible. On those, they actually bring in University Professors to teach the class. It's not an AP course, its 100% legit college credit. I wish I would have had that shit when i was in school. AP Tests sucked !
