Does anyone on here home school? We are looking into doing this for my younger son and are looking for the best route to take. After reading there are places that offer set curriculums for grade levels but the prices are all over the place. What is the best route to take?

Look at Texas Tech University's online K-12 program. It's a certified Texas Independent School District and has an awesome curriculum. Everything is internet and/or DVD based. The books are fairly priced and tuition is very low. My son did it for his 9th grade year, but wanted to try a charter school next to our house this year.

Homeschooling is such a handicap in my opinion. Don't kill the kids social life, let him learn the real world.

There are other social activities that kids can have better interaction than with public schools. My son plays several sports and is involved with Civil Air Partol and church. The only "social interaction" that is taken away is the DISTRACTION in the classroom.

There are also home schooling co-ops where parents get together to assist each other based on their strengths. They'll also put together field trips and other outtings, plus there is always the option to join city leagues and Elite teams for sports.

And Texas even has a homeschool sports league now.

Waaay too many options these days.

Those are all watered down versions of the real deal. I have a decent amount of relatives that were homeschooled and they went nowhere. I had a few classmates in college that were homeschooled and were relatively smart...but socially inept.

I have a hard time believing that ANY parent (especially on this forum) can teach a kid multiple subjects better than a staff of teachers. Kids that are taught correctly at home can avoid the classroom distractions. You can't hide your kids from everything.

Homeschooling is for parents that want to continue to feed their kids full.of lies.and essentially brainwash them because the parents themselves don't even know they are brainwashed and part of the problem. Hence is why 99% of the books are religiously based.

No worries here, my child will have mastered the entire CFA curriculum by the time he or she can walk. Yes child, there's a reason daddy saved 10,000 pages of graduate level finance material, get cracking.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Another vote against home schooling; I have two cousins who were home schooled and their son is socially retarded. He went to college, and now has a job in the oil field and still has no idea how to interact with people, even with family. The daughter fared slightly better, but that is only because she spent half her time NOT listening to her parents. Even though she has tried to be normal, she is still missing something with social interaction, just not as bad as her brother.

If you want to avoid the public school route, find a good private school if you can afford it. Most of those are religious based, but are no where near as bad as the private curriculum; ie they actually teach real science. I looked at my cousin's junior high "science" book and the section about how planets and stars are formed was literally "God made them". It also had dinosaurs living with man, but not in a Jurassic-themed park.
I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.

Didn't kill mine. I was home schooled from 2nd grade forward. Takes a parent with balls, my mom wasn't my mom, she was the teacher and there was no pushing her around.

I was on Abeca program. I was learning college level stuff in highschool.

Unless they are the kind completely schooled by only their own parents and not allowed to socialize with others, that's just not true any more.

We home school our kids, 4 & 5 through a co-op, but we have been around many of our friends kids and watched them for years. They have all the programs and more that any public schools have. They have concerts, plays, field trips, proms, graduations like any public school kids. I have watched several of the kids from the time they were in 6th grade until now they are in college and watched them grow up. They are well adjusted, very intelligent, and pretty normal kids as far as music, sports, hobbies etc. The parents teach the kids through the week, then on Friday's meet with all the other students/teachers and have the special classes. There is no fighting, there are no clicks, all ages get along. It just shows what its like when parents are really involved with a kids life and what a difference it makes.
