Maybe it's because you only notice the bad ones, but homeschooled kids that played on my sports teams, transferred into our jr high/high school, or that I met in college were fucking weird. Did meet a normalish hot chick in college that had been homeschooled, she loooooooooooooooved the cock, good times.

It does the child a disservice IMO and is almost like child abuse.

Again, maybe it's like hair plugs, you only notice the fucked up ones

I'm not a fan of home schooling myself. Just playing a devil's advocate here from what I saw of parents doing this overseas myself. Granted, their kids were nice - but not what I consider normal, jolly kids.

Anyway, the one edge I think home schooling could give is specific one on one attention that professional educators can not give. You stick a parent in a classroom they'll fail for sure. However, assuming they understand the material I'm fairly certain the amount of attention they can give personally to their kids would help compensate for their lack of in-classroom experience.

With that said, I think in a decent school I'd rather all the other lessons be learned - at least all the stuff I learned in a public school (personal responsibility, social...fighting...etc) as opposed to possibly over protecting at home. Besides, I'm paying those damned taxes - might as well make some use of that money.

Are you seriously dense enough to think that parents can teach better than teachers who have years of experience and have worked perfecting the art of teaching for years? I'm not saying public teachers are amazing...but they're better than MOST parents out there. You must have been homeschooled. Yes both my parents did have to work...not sure what that has to do with anything.

I have yet to see any teacher public school has to offer that is worth writing home about. Do they exist? Ya, sure they do, but they are few and far between. I speak from experience on both side of the subject. Do you? Or is this just some thing you were taught by an awesome public school teacher? Having both parents IS relevent, which proves you really don't know what the hell you're talking about (again). I wouldn't suggest having any type of home school program without a parent dedicated to it. If you went all the way through public schools without unnecessary distractions, maybe it's you with the handicap. I like how you're ready to make everyone's decision for their kid with that last statement. Why would we make any decisions about our children without your blessing?

That's how it works, unless they are held under a specific curriculum by an independent school district.

What is this disservice? Everyone seems to be so hell-bent on "social time" for the child, when it's been said over and over again that there are just as much opportunities to be social outside of a classroom in both cases. The only differenece is that the parent can insure the children get the proper education and a superior level of attention to help them accomplish their goals.

If a kid does not learn how to handle "distractions" in school... how will they ever survive life, or much less a job, when distractions are not avoidable. I had some great teachers and I got out of school what I put into it.

School is more than just learning text books.

I'm thinking the best home schooling option would be to spend a few days at each members house, learning stuff and shit. We can all be teachers!

For what it is worth, I don't think your opinion is wrong. To each their own kind of thing.

There are a lot of things we keep kids from that they "don't have to learn on their own" all the time. It's called parenting and setting your child up for success.

A distraction can be almost anything, including a teacher's lack of ability, teaching the class to the lowest level (NCLB), stupid mouthbreathing kids that don't allow for proper learning environments, etc.

True and thanks. The OP came in here asking for options because he's going to homeschool. He didn't want some windowlickers telling him his child was going to be Forrest Gump because of it.

Shut up, Mr. Engineer, you obviously know nothing because I'm mad that I can't prove a point so I'm just gonna call you stupid.

                            Still going riding the 24th?

I know I'm not going to change your mind, but in my experience it's the opposite. Most of my family is in the teaching profession, and if they didn't give a shit, they wouldn't spend countless hours and money doing it. I've spent many nights myself putting up/taking down bulletin boards, grading papers, etc so that my wife could come home at a decent hour. There was always 20 other teachers at almost dark doing the same things. I can name many caring and great teachers from when I went to school. What happened to you to make you so jaded? Nobody said there weren't some bad teachers out there, but more often then not they do a good job.

Agreed, my teachers are the reason I was able to get through calculus 3 in HS. They were the reason I was a state science champion. They were the reason I got several scholarships. Teachers are the reason I was able to compete in robotics competitions that got me my job. I really do owe a lot to the teachers for sitting down with me long enough to explain algebra at an early age.
