  • Progressive Snapshot?

Has anybody enrolled in this? Having a GPS tracker on my car isn't something I'm completely comfortable with, but I don't really have much to hide on where I come and go from. The fact that it *could* save me 30% is tempting though. Any real world experience? If so, did you get any discounts, or did your rate stay the same?
How do we forget ourselves? How do we forget our minds?

I'd have no problem with having a GPS tracker on any of my vehicles, it does seem kind of big brotherish, but that's not the intent. As long as they replace the parts that were ripped off when it's recovered.

If you have any performance, stereo, or aesthetic add-ons, I'd certainly get them added to your policy if you haven't already. Which everybody should anyway.

It would depend on the fee, and what that 30% is worth. If it's negligible then I wouldn't bother, but if it goes down to 25% or even 10%, savings is savings.

x2, my girl has progressive and we recently had a situation where she was driving her brothers car and got into an accident. his insurance quoted it at 6300 and progressive came back with 4800.

progressive wanted to use used parts to fix it!

I have zero interest in something like that out of principle.

Good god, how dare them! That car wasn't used, it wasn't ever driven! It was brand spanking new, sitting on the showroom floor when it got into an accident! Why would we want parts off of the same model year or newer put on our car? The parts that they would replace aren't used, oh wait...

Message: Reading the Terms and Conditions for the Snapshot program, I noticed that there is a "technology fee" associated with it.

                    Two questions:

                    1. How much is that fee?
                    2. Is it refundable?

who is to say the one they rip off the junker is a oem part? i want a gel-coated oem part if it is available, if it is not i'd like to decide if it gets an aftermarket piece or a junk yard piece. either way i'll have put time into prepping the junk yard piece regardless of if it is in perfect condition (unless it just so happens to be painted the correct color and matches right off the bat, rare to say the least).

In my experience, used parts are almost always better than repop new parts.

As for a GPS tracker voluntarily installed on my car? Ain't gonna happen. I'll put a Lojack on it, but I don't necessarily want my insurance company to be able to track my every move. It's not like I'm doing anything wrong, it's just that I don't want them to jack up my rates if they catch me doing 85 or driving more miles than I claimed or... whatever they can dream up.

Moritz had a customer flip out and take their car out of there a couple of weeks ago because there was a Greenleaf truck delivering parts. The guy made a scene in front of our driver about not wanting used parts. I doubt the parts were even for his car. I guess since it wasn't a GM truck delivering parts he just assumed they were crap. I wonder if he thinks UPS makes the parts they deliver?

I'm with you on the aftermarket stuff. There are some quality pieces but there are a lot more Chinese stamped parts that are super thin and will rust through the first time you drive them to the coast or will warp when it gets 100+ degrees outside. I'd always want salvage over aftermarket for sheet metal.

If Ford has their way they'll shut down the aftermarket part industry anyways. I doubt they'll win but they are suing everyone in town that makes aftermarket parts that appear to be OEM over trademark violations.

Yeah, I would rather have used OEM than new aftermarket.

Well, its a term called Insurance Quality that you are referring to. Used aftermarket parts wouldn't be sold, or would be listed NIQ.

OEM parts aren't gel coated, they have a sealer to prevent rust on them. They still need to be sanded, and prepped before paint, just like a recycled part.

There is not a single insurance co that does what you said you wanted done. All of them use recycled OEM parts or aftermarket in repairs.

Aftermarket is a hit or miss deal. The stuff that is certified is close to the cost of an new OEM part. Many times dealers can price match the good stuff. The cheap shit that you "prefer" to have used generally doesn't have the fit or finish of OEM, and many times is thinner and will dent easier.

Look at it this way, nothing fits better than an OEM part. Nothing else is made of the same metal. In many cases, a recycled part will make the same repair that a new OEM would, at a lower cost. You are saying that the damaged part is somehow not a used part already, a recycled part would be as close to replacing the damaged part as it gets.
