I've got a few fed buddies out here, and they say that it's by far the worst job of the group. Hard work, boring ass days, little reward, and slower promotion rate. Plus, they are pretty much the bitch of the fed totem pole. This is coming from DEA, ATF, and ICE agents separately. I was considering it for after I got out, but they all told me to pretty much go anywhere else.

I'm interesed in getting into federal law enforcement. My step-cousin who's an ICE agent told me that since I don't have my college degree BP would be the quickest and easiest way to get my "federal time clock" started, to where I could apply to another agency later on.

That quite possibly could be true. When talking with my buddies, we all have degrees so that might swing the opinion.

I, personally, don't think it would be that bad of a job...but I guess it's what you're into. They just don't get the high profile recognition that the investigator types of ICE and DEA get.

Whatever it may be, you definitely want to get into it sooner than later so you are gettin paid by the time you retire. Also, I think the age cap to join is 39.

I've done some research and it doesn't seem like it would be that bad of a job, you'll have some slow days where no much is going on, and you'll have some busy days where all sorts of shit is going on. I'm actually surprised at how long their bootcamp is, their recruits come out of training with over 60+ hours of firearms training.

ICE or DEA is what I'm most interested in later in the future. My biggest thing is wanting to get that clock started for retirement.

Be ready to move to the borderlands

I really don't know much about the fed end of things, there's just a ton of them out here so I've picked their brains a little bit. I've yet to talk to an actual BP agent though.

I do know that I was convoying up to some training in NM and my HMMWV got stopped at one of the check points. The brilliant BP agent stopped us, had us step out of the HMMWV, and asked us if we were American...

Some of them aren't too bright. Before I go getting into anything I'm trying to find out if there are specific positions you can apply for as an agent, or if you're basically an agent and they stick you where they want you...

Joining the BP has always been a 2nd "backup" plan for myself, and seeing how i'll be staying in El Paso forever ( military background , movin' every 2 years from the time you were born, till you moved out gets extremly old. ) And since i've been here since 03 when my dad got stationed at bliss i don't entend the move anymore.... besides I have to find SOME way to thank the guys sitting on the boarder highway ( Loop 375 ) for the "mexico runs "

You are their bitch, you can be relocated when they need you. Not to mention a lot of their duty positions are in shitty places to start with.

Without a degree, the BP is your way in, as they'll take just about anyone with a heartbeat. I almost went that route before coming back to Iraq. I actually ran into a few guys that were working BP before coming out here. They said it was like a security job and they were all treated like crap. Yuo can get in without a degree, but don't look to get any promotions or nice spots or nice shifts ESPECIALLY if you're white.

Again, DO NOT rely on this solely to move into any of the ODA's (FBI, CIA, ICE, ATF, etc.) unless you plan on getting a degree. When my mom was working for the DOL, she was officed with some ATFpeople. At the time, I was working at Cockrell Hill PD. We would always go to lunch, hang out, etc. They were trying to persuade me to get on with them and they'd make sure the right strings were pulled... until I said I didn't have a Bachelors. They said no one could help me unless I at least had that.
