"Gathering information about government officials in a form that can readily be disseminated to others serves a cardinal First Amendment interest in protecting and promoting “the free discussion of governmental affairs.” Moreover, as the Court has noted, “[f]reedom of expression has particular significance with respect to government because ‘[i]t is here that the state has a special incentive to repress opposition and often wields a more effective power of suppression.’” This is particularly true of law enforcement officials, who are granted substantial discretion that may be misused to deprive individuals of their liberties. Ensuring the public’s right to gather information about their officials not only aids in the uncovering of abuses, but also may have a salutary effect on the functioning of government more generally".

I can agree with this. But it begs the question, what video isn't allowed?

Plenty of judges bar cameras/press from their courtrooms.

Just as police should be able to use any recording made as evidence in whatever case.

                    ...

I think the next time I get stopped by the police, I will pull out my phone and start recording them, just like they are recording me.

I dunno about rape, but that blonde cop on the Broward County show can "cuff me and stuff me" into her little honey hole all night long.

Chilli Peppers "Sir Psycho Sexy" comes to mind.

No, they are acting as an agent of the government, an agent with a monopoly on legal violence and incarceration. We as citizens must have a way to equalize that threat against our safety and security. And our rights are enumerated, police rights to record us aren't.

As far as I'm concerned, if it is okay for a cop to wear a camera to record my every word or move so they can use it against me if they choose, then I should have the right to do the same against them.

I think the idea that you should not record police in public is absolutely retarded. I could absolutely understand it being an issue if the person recording is doing so in a disruptive manner and is interefering with the cops work, but that is the only exception I can see.
