A DVT feels like a tooth ache behind the knee. I found that mine did come and go as the day went on, but by all means, you should get it checked out.

That's pretty much how it feels. It hasn't bothered me in a few days, but it was pretty constant for a few weeks..yay.

As for Frank..just chill out and relax in the hospital for a few days. Get your Lovenox injections and hang out. You can probably have people bring in food for you if you are on a regular diet.
Where would you like me to start. My wife had major hip surgery and she was on Yaz birth control. The Dr. never told her to stop taking the birth control. Matter of fact he told her to keep taking it and even take it the day of surgery. On top of that in his surgery notes he called for blood thiners but then never prescribed them.

She ended up with 4 blood clots in her lungs and one in her leg.

My dad just went through this same thing exactly. Went to his Dr. complaining of some pains and shortness of breath, Doc did a CAT scan and sent him to the ER immediately. He had a clot behind his left knee and a couple in his right lung. Since he is almost 75yo they admitted him to ICU for the first 3 days then to a regular room for 2 more until his blood had thinned out enough. He now has to take Coumadin (rat poison) to keep his blood thin for at least 6 months. All the nurses and his Docs up there said he was a ticking time bomb and had he waited any longer he could have died if the clot behind his knee would have come loose.

          Not "yay".

Either one is bad news. One requires surgery (most likely) and the other makes Chili a widower - if you don't get it checked out.

            He's lucky.
I was told that if they hit the lungs, you can die in 3 minutes.

Which is probably why they had him in ICU for the first 3 days. But, it seemed like everyone at the hospital was more concerned about the clot in his leg then the 2 in his lungs, maybe they were extremely small and didn't pose a threat.

Only if its big enough, though at his age, it might not have to be very big.
According to the cat scan I had several small ones that made it to my lungs but they said my body was able to overcome them. I'm sure having never smoked helps some.

Well, since I was so thoughtful with the info, can I have the Galaxie? I mean, if you croak.

One of the captains on the 'Deadliest Catch' crab show got a clot in his leg, while he was in the hospital for it one went into/formed in his brain and he died from it.

Yep, heard that. They have plans to test my heart since it made it to my lungs and could cause my heart to work harder.

It hurts the most when I first start walking on it after being off of it for a while, then the more I walk, the less it hurts. Wonder if I should get it checked out...

Oh, and Frank-glad you're ok and hope you have a speedy recovery.
You do not have a DVT...that is either patellar tendonitis, osteoarthritis or chondromalacia patella.

Awesome. At least I won't die. Thanks, Dr. Hotty.

A massive pulmonary embolus can kill you instantly. I have seen it...just talking to a patient post-op and the life goes out of his eyes, he turned blue and fell over dead. And we could do nothing for him.

DVTs are in the deep veins of the lower leg. They are caused by one of three things (Virchow's Triad)...hypercoagulabilty, endothelial (inside of blood vessel) injury or bloodflow stasis/turbulence. Patients usually present with pain in the affected extremity with swelling as the blood flow return to the heart is impeded by the clots and the plasma fluid extravasates into the surrounding tissues.

As stated, these blood clots arent something to take lightly and they can kill you very quickly. Good luck.
