As for Frank..just chill out and relax in the hospital for a few days. Get your Lovenox injections and hang out. You can probably have people bring in food for you if you are on a regular diet.
She ended up with 4 blood clots in her lungs and one in her leg.

My dad just went through this same thing exactly. Went to his Dr. complaining of some pains and shortness of breath, Doc did a CAT scan and sent him to the ER immediately. He had a clot behind his left knee and a couple in his right lung. Since he is almost 75yo they admitted him to ICU for the first 3 days then to a regular room for 2 more until his blood had thinned out enough. He now has to take Coumadin (rat poison) to keep his blood thin for at least 6 months. All the nurses and his Docs up there said he was a ticking time bomb and had he waited any longer he could have died if the clot behind his knee would have come loose.

Not "yay".
Either one is bad news. One requires surgery (most likely) and the other makes Chili a widower - if you don't get it checked out.

I was told that if they hit the lungs, you can die in 3 minutes.

According to the cat scan I had several small ones that made it to my lungs but they said my body was able to overcome them. I'm sure having never smoked helps some.

Oh, and Frank-glad you're ok and hope you have a speedy recovery.

DVTs are in the deep veins of the lower leg. They are caused by one of three things (Virchow's Triad)...hypercoagulabilty, endothelial (inside of blood vessel) injury or bloodflow stasis/turbulence. Patients usually present with pain in the affected extremity with swelling as the blood flow return to the heart is impeded by the clots and the plasma fluid extravasates into the surrounding tissues.
As stated, these blood clots arent something to take lightly and they can kill you very quickly. Good luck.
