Matter isn't escaping the black hole.

Some is ejected with incredibly high amounts of energy right before reaching the event horizon.

Yeah, I know, it's really just semantics on my part, calling them out for a vague statement (e.g. "nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole"). Especially when you consider the relativity of quasars to SM Black Holes.
