They'll run, it'll just clatter. If you aren't putting a load on the bearings it'll run for a long time. That's not to say the rings aren't going to rip the cylinder walls apart and the lifters aren't going to grind down the cam but they will run.

As a line tech GM used to be really fond of putting crank kits in cars if it were possible, it paid about half the time it actually took and you always had to wait forever for parts. Some of the techs would drain the oil out and go beat the piss out of them in the parking lot, I've personally seen a 454 idle for 3 hours with no oil at all before it finally spun a main bearing. It wasn't nearly as cool as the Tracker that caught on fire after chunking a rod through the power steering line but it was still impressive.

        ok.....
the service manager came to my work and picked up the keys without question. he took oil, a drain plug and a new filter. he put the new drain plug in and added oil. started and said it sounded ok. so instead of towing it, he drove it back to the shop and checked the oil and filter again. i think he said that it was changed trice and he drove it about 75 miles ( which i believe, unless they can run the odometer forward on these cars.) drained it again. everything looked and sounded fine. he brought it to my work with a singed guaranty for 5 month/5000 mile. i drove it home and it does sound fine. the oil looks like regular oil, not some thick sludge to quieten noises.

so i was not happy with the drain plug being loose, but am completely satisfied with the manor it was handled, afterwards. they never implied any fault other than theirs. he drove his own car to pick up the keys( which was a nice sounding cammed late model GTO) and was completely sincere in his apologies about the incident.

granted some may shake their heads about even going to pepboys in the first place. but in ten years that i have used them for various things i could not/did not have the time/or just did not want to do, this was the first issue.

Did he let you drive the GTO while he was out driving your car around for 75+ miles? Glad you're happy with the incident. Agree with BP, go trade it on a new Fusion from Skip before the engine frags in 5,005 miles.

I'd wait another year. The fusion is up for a redesign in 2013 and is suppose to be offered with a 4cyl eco boost.

2012 should have an ecoboost also.

I recently took mine there to get a flat repair (because it was free) and I had to tell them 4 FUCKING TIMES that it was the left rear and not the right rear. They really do make the clowns at Walmart look like geniuses.

^^^^^^ this I would change the oil now so if they put anything in it it will be out and any issues will arise before the 5000 mile mark. If it had noise they are betting that what they put in will not get drained as most people will go more then 5k miles between changes.

It should be fine. It sounds like yall didn't drive far with no oil. If you wanted a new motor you should have ran it til it blew.

if you got the guarantee in writing, id drain the oil, blow the engine, and fill it back up to get a new motor instead of letting them band-aid the situation and have it come back and bite you in the ass. Also how would you like to be the guy who buys it when you trade it in and possibly have to replace the motor in a year or sooner
