IMO, it should be voluntary AND have a suggested due date of next week sometime. Show some respect for busy parents and allow time for them to hopefully have a day off to spend some time on it. You'll still accomplish every goal you expect to accomplish this way (identify the committed, involved parents, learn about the kids, help to set an example, etc) and you won't have to come off as impatient, demanding, or disrespectful of other people's time.

The whole requirement and Wednesday due date would rub me the wrong way, and obviously would make a lot of others feel the same. Why start off the year like that?

From the teachers perspective, it gives an idea of how educated the parents are/aren't.

          Jesus, people.
i agree with leah on this one, this lazyness is the reason why are kids are so fucked up these days. kids arent cars and teachers arent techs to fix your car even if it takes 12 years.

I agree with Leah somewhat. And I rarely do so on the subject of teaching.

I'm amazed at how many people act like dead beats. I know most of y'all would honestly do the essay...or hope you would. But why do y'all act like it's a big deal?! It's a fucking short essay. I know y'all are not possibly too busy to pop this out...if I have time to work 40-60 hours a week, take masters classes that consist of several essays, work on developing a business and write several proposals a week, AND work out 5 times a week...then y'all can write a simple essay about your kids.

Post up the assignment. I want to see if any details were stretched, or If she really ordered y'all around.

This is the only reason teachers should make more...asshole parents.

We would get the essay done as a family. I would take the laptop to the kitchen so my wife can type it up.

This post sums it up completely. As I mentioned before, a simple note asking parents to give a bit of info on their child would have been fine and even welcomed, a note demanding an essay and giving a 'due' date is, in my opinion, and arrogant asshole-ish move.

Also, I believe it isn't a teachers place to judge the intelligence of the parents of a child as it shouldn't have any bearing on how they educate said child, the kid should get equal treatment even if the parents are illiterate shit-flinging skunk-apes straight out of the swamp.

                    Probably the best response yet.

How many school-aged children do you have?

Here is the note, word for word, bolded and italicized as it comes in the note.

                          PARENT HOMEWORK:

I am so excited to have your child in my class this year. I am ready to know everything about your wonderful children.

Please write me an essay about your child. I want to know EVERYTHING! Tell me all ther favorites, what drives them crazy, what their interests are, what their dreams are, all their strengths, any weaknesses, and anything you think that I should know so that we can have positive, fantastic year.

Please send this essay to school by Wednesday, August 24.

Thank you so much for supporting your child and XXXXXX Elementary.

                          Mrs. XXXXXX

Honestly, I feel her enthusiasm to be a connected teacher with your child.
Granted, it was in my cousin's voice. She is a teacher within our school district.
How did "Meet the teacher night" go?

I have 0, because I...much like yourself, don't want that responsibility (see what I did there?). Doesn't mean I haven't been through my share of teachers. Seriously teach your kid to do more than bare minimum. If you want to get ahead you have to do more than required. Why is this such a big deal to you?

Btw...that note is fucking pleasant. If your kid shares your mentality, he will be out of college in a week...if he makes it in the first place. This attitude is what gives kids the so called entitlement attitude.
