Sucks that you had to deal with such panic holding onto your son.

I had a similar story a few weeks ago at our community pool:

Was swimming with the wifey and noticed a small girl (about 5yo) across the pool from me. She ran and jumped into the deeper end. She tried swimming back but went under and stayed. I watched for a few seconds and just felt like something was wrong, so I looked closer and saw her sucking water and panicking under water.

I swam over as quick as I could, grabbed her from the bottom and lifted her out. Her lungs were full of water and she was gagging. I turned her back to my chest, bear hugged her chest and squeezed. Just then Mary saw what I was doing and saw the girl spew water 2 feet out. The girl started crying and I brought her to the edge. Her "father", who was sitting in the shade back where he couldn't see her, finally hears people yelling and comes over to get her.

He takes her from me and says not one word, not to me or his daughter who almost just drowned.

All of those warning signs hit home here. My 3yo is learning to swim, and even though she moves like a torpedo when she's horizontal, she'll forget & go perpendicular, mouth just below the surface, pleading w/ her eyes for help.

Do you have kids ? If you do, I'm wondering why this question even popped into your head. This is great information for anyone that will be in or even near the water at all. If you took the time to read all of the info that Matt posted, you could possibly save someone's life.

Thanks for posting it, Matt. My little girl loves to swim. I'll definitely keep these in mind from now on when I'm watching her swim.

Make sure you put a fence around your pool.

our backyard is fenced(and is required by city code before we can get permit) and all the gates have locks on them..also all the doors beep if opened so we will know if the back door is opened. we are taking all the precautions we can to make it as safe as possible.

Over the past 16 years, I can count at least 10 children that have died in the backyard of a clients home because their YARD is fenced in, but the pool wasn't secured beyond that. Fencing in your yard keeps the pool safe from neighbors and vice versa, but it also makes the pool that much more dangerous to any children ON premises.


Go the extra mile and put a locking fence around the pool.... you'll never regret it.
