FORT WORTH -- A 27-year-old Fort Worth man died Wednesday afternoon after being put in a chokehold by homeowners who found him burglarizing their house, police said.
Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine what caused the death of Bryane Jackson before proceeding with the investigation, said Sgt. Pedro Criado, a police spokesman.
The incident occurred about 12:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Canberra Court, just south of U.S. 287 near Cobb Park.
The homeowners told police that they returned from enrolling in school and found that someone was inside their house. Two male family members went inside and found a man holding one of the family's televisions, Criado said.
"A fight ensues between the two family members and [the] suspect," Criado said in an e-mail. "One of the male family members put the suspect in a choke hold and [the] suspect became unresponsive."
Jackson was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:23 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending toxicology tests, which routinely take four to six weeks, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner's office.
Jackson lived in the same block where the alleged burglary occurred, medical examiner's records indicate.
In an unrelated burglary Thursday morning, police say the owner of a vacant house shot a man in the leg in the 2400 block of Birdell Court, just west of Stalcup Road and Ramey Avenue.
The homeowner told police that the house had first been broken into Wednesday and that he had returned about 9 a.m. Thursday to make sure it was secure. When he arrived, the back door was open and he heard noises coming from inside, so he called 911.
Police said the man who was inside the home fell through the ceiling and charged at the homeowner with a knife, so the homeowner fired several shots, hitting him at least once.
The suspect, identified in a police report as Don Butler, 53, was arrested and taken to a hospital. He faces aggravated-robbery charges, police said.

I would say we need to see what the burglar says....but he's dead now. I'm sure it was purely the homeowners fear and self defense was necessary. Homeowner 1, burglar 0. As for the other guy...too bad he didn't have a 12 guage. Now if the guy lives we're gonna have to pay for all his surgeries and his room and board. He shoulda shot him again.
