When I went to Navy boot camp, I was SHOCKED how many people there couldn't swim or could barely swim. Some kid that seemed to be terrified of the water nearly drowned me by clinging onto me during the water-treading test.
I mean, c'mon...it's the fucking NAVY! That's like interviewing for a high-rise window washer job when you have a severe fear of heights."It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself."

Nope I can't swim at all! Can't tread water or float! I tried to learn and even had lessons as a kid but never could get the hang of it. I received allot of shit from friends over the years and even they tried to teach me. I’m a loss cause.
I keep my ass in the shallow end!

like 20% of the dudes in bootcamp(navy) couldn't swim... wtf is wrong with you for joining the navy and can't swim?!
i taught myself under my stepmoms supervision when i was around 8 years old. it was during summer and she wasn't working at the time and for some reason out of the blue i told her i wanted to learn how to swim on my own. she was a bit surprised but said okay, of course she stayed right there with me but didn't help me at all or give any advice. i would hang on to the edge of the pool on the deep end and push off to the other side. i started on the narrow end where the other side was only maybe 5-6 feet away then slowly got to the point where i was crossing the widest part. after that i did the same thing with treading/floating, just let go of the side and when i started going under just reach over and grab the side. after less than a week i was jumping into the deep end and swimming around with no problems
self-taught badass FTW!!

When I was 3 or 4 I had a bad scare when I fell in a pool, but it didn't stop me from getting back in the water. I took swimming lessons almost immediately after.
I've never understood people who just accept the fact that "they can't swim" as if it's a permanent condition. Take some goddamn lessons, it may save your life.

I'm with y'all I don't get it. My wife grew up in Euless and just never learned to swim. She doesn't necessarily have a great fear of the water she just will not go in too deep which suits her fine. My parents have a pool and my mother and I have offered her lessons even going as far to have someone come over and give private lessons at their pool she just does not have an interest in it. I blame her parents for that and a few other things. Now I am no Mark Spitz but I can swim. It was just something that my parents felt was important. My mother had a an uncle that she was very close to that drowned in the lake where My sister and I learned to swim. We both were taught with the sink or swim method too. I cannot remember a summer that we did not go to the lake house my aunt and uncle had on that lake, many fond memories there.Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.
