  • How many people do not know how to swim?

Maybe it's because I grew up in Texas, and water is essential to survival.. but what the hell is the deal with people not knowing how to swim? Are humans the only creature that has individuals that don't know how to swim? You take any dog, mouse, lizard, etc. toss them in water and they swim fine. I just do not fundamentally understand how a person could not flail and keep their head above water. How does one not have the ambition to learn?

A friend of mine's gf can't swim, I just don't get how people can't, or never learned how to.

    Makes me go like this

I could swim like a fish from a very early age. I don't really get it, either. It's legit though. Just look at that lady who drowned in the Trinity last night. It didn't see to be that rough of water, or even really deep.

What happens when you throw them in a lake - do they struggle and paddle and fight to keep from sinking, or do they just drop to the bottom?

That's what sparked this thread. Who in the HELL jumps into water not knowing how to swim? It's like an asthmatic volunteering to run from a cougar.

And for the record, lola can't swim worth a shit. We put her in the pool when she was a puppy, she could paddle fine for about 3 seconds then start to sink like a rock.

How is swimming so difficult for you exactly? I'm seriously interested.

My mom never learned how to swim and she grew up in Paris, Tx. Can't get much smaller or country than that in the 1940's-1950's. Not real sure how she was able to accomplish that except that she was a book nerd and always studying. lol

She finally took swimming lessons in her 50's because she wanted to go on a cruise. She wouldn't go until she learned because she was worried about the ship sinking.

when i was kid i got trapped under some of the big kids that were having chicken fights. i remember looking up and spitting out water. i guess it's more of the fear of having water in my face more than anything else. (i cant even wash my face in the shower) now i can surf, jet ski, tube and all that, but i think it's because i know there is something to grab onto. i don't really know, i just panic i guess.

Yeah my brother drowned my ass when I was a kid (we were fighting over who got to play with the millennium falcon) and my dad had to spin my ass around like a top to get the water out of my lungs. I understand the whole fear of drowning. It seems like you know how to swim, you just got screwed one time.

My dad doesn't swim and I don't think he is that great but if he had to I am sure he could to survive. He has been in Florida for 25 years.

I learned to swim when I was young, like 3-4 or something. I was raised in Fl though.
