  • Question for electricians/HVAC

My mother's house was built in 1956. Its a modest 2 bdrm 1 bath brick. She's lived there since 1958. The house only has 2 breakers. She has central heat (gas) but not central air. She only has 120v, no 220v. She can't have a window unit in the kitchen because as soon as a microwave is turned on, it trips the breaker. Everything in the kitchen and living room is on one circuit and the breaker is back inside a closet.

I am trying to figure out how to get her house cooler without shelling out thousands of $$$. Growing up the house was quite cool with just the window unit in the kitchen but now with a microwave and other electronics on the circuit, its no longer feasible. I'm a little nervous about calling on an electrician. I really don't want someone half-assing it so I intent to call a pro. I understand that if they find problems or add or upgrade anything, then they have to bring the entire house all up to current codes and they will shut off the power until the Fire inspector ok's it? Does that sound right?

or, could we have just a standalone 220v circuit stood up outside near the meter with an outlet in the kitchen for a bigger AC unit?

send rustypnus a PM (if that's still his SN here) His name is Scott Miller.

He'll more than likely be able to hook you up and he's dirt cheap on what he charges without slacking on the quality of work performed.

Without seeing your service in person its going to be difficult to quote you on that. Depending on what needs to be done will be the main factor in being without power. There are ways around upgrading the entire service which can save you tons. Pm me your contact info and we can discuss things further.

Correction I fixed your jigrigged dryer outlet and made it safe to fucking use lol

                          Where is the panel?
Does it back-up to the meter?
                          Is the service overhead?

As the homeowner, you can get a permit and do the work yourself, if you can't afford to pay someone. If you can answer a few questions and possibly post a pic or two, I'd be happy to tell you how to do it yourself and give you a material list. If you can afford to have someone do the work, I'm sure RustyPnus can take care of it.
