The best advice I ever heard and I'm sticking to it is find an income level you are comfortable at, say $50-75k or whatever. Then, as you and/or your wife earn more and more money as you progress in your career STAY AT THAT SAME STANDARD OF LIVING and bank the difference. You'll be amazed at how liberating that philosophy is. Minimize debt and maximize savings.
Spoken like a true CPA, haha! (I have several family members who are CPAs so this was ingrained in me early on.)

If you do not mind me asking... how long did it take you to get that?

I could figure out a way to do that in a relatively short time.. but life would suck with no fun.. and it would most likely cause a divorce if I was that tight with our money.

The 401K loan is still a good option. I've taken out three during my career, and I'm glad to have had one out beginning in 2008 so at least that money wasn't exposed to the stock market dump in 2009.

          • Interest free check written on CC account and done. It will cost me 3% off the bat but it is there if needed and can be paid off within 12 months if I wanted.
I do not have PINS for them or I could just do that. There is a reason for having credit. I think it's called Shit Happens.

You'll never get it if you both aren't set to do it. No "solid barg," but we got there a long while back. As soon as we drew up a plan, it became more or less a challenge to try to beat our estimates. Now we make new goals to break.

              • I used to be pretty bad about spending most, if not all of my liquid cash on extraneous BS, and was essentially living paycheck to paycheck, even though I was making plenty to cover all bills and then some.

I got myself in a situation to need to borrow money a time or two, which is plain stupid considering that I was making plenty to build a savings account. Definitely irresponsible behavior, and I have only myself to blame.

I'm glad to be in a position now to have built up a decent savings, with a few investments as well, but not everybody is in a position to put money away given their financial state and possible dependents.

There are plenty of people that blow their money like I used to as well though, it's a hard lesson if you get in a tough spot.

I have to admit... I tend to spend. I do have right at 6 months of normal monthly expense saved up, not to mention my stock pile of food and basic needed items for living amongst other things.

I have finally got to that point though I'm "satisfied" with all the shit I have... so saving has been happening a lot more lately.

My problem was graduating and making even more. After a house and furniture I've slowed my spending a little, but am still an absolute dipshit about blowing money on useless stuff. Going out has to be the biggest. I wish I had finance skillz like the slow99

                            True that...

My problem is I was trying to get to the point my parents were at when I left the house, and I'm finally to that point.

Now I'm concentrating paying everything off. I hope to have all 4 of my car notes paid off by mid next year, then do a solid on the house and have it paid off in a few more years after that...

That's the plan anyway. If I can keep from buying silver, guns, and ammunition.
