  • Is it illegal to remove a third brake light?

I assume that it is, but just wondering if any of you cops or wannabe cops might know.

It is, as it is standard equipment installed by the manufacturer.

I wouldn't think so, but I've been out of the game for a while.

Yes it is. US Transportation code requires an independant brake light in the center rear of the vehicle. TX transportation code allows enforcement of those codes.

remember that cop who stopped you because your third light was out?

(although inspection may be a different issue)

Also, passenger cars after 1986, and trucks after 1994 are required to have them.

So don't cruse around with a visible butane torch, and have insurance. Problems solved.

I'm not talking about a ticket for defective equipment... I'm talking about removing functional equipment. lol

I'm assuming this is only for 1986-newer cars and 1994-newer trucks. My '57 Chrysler doesn't have one... and won't get one either.

I removed mine back when I had my SN95. I'm a rebel though.

I don't think it's enforced too regularly. I see trucks all the time with campers shells or the Roll bar type attachments on the back covering the 3rd brake light...

On the '57 you're fine. It's not required.

My 85 Grand National was not equipped with one although I installed one from the wrecked 87 I bought to do the engine conversion.

I've got mine covered by a camper shell. I see people all the time around here with them covered. Might be illegal but doesn't seem to be enforced too often.
