  • Lean/Six Sigma help in here...

I've got a question for you process improvement gurus.

How do you create a measurable standard in a process that is constantly changing and has nearly limitless variables?

For example, I want to measure an employee's performance. I can't judge his performance based on throughput because each job is completely different than the next therefore requiring less/more time to complete.

Quality of course is a given measurable, but what/how do you judge efficiency? Historical data? What if there is no historical data?

Time studies at each position and maybe a pattern will show up? Gotta lay a base line down somewhere first.

There has to be some sort of metric to use... does each job have a known or baseline completion time (like flag hours at a dealership)? Or is it really one-off, non-repeating every time?

What kind of process is it? Fabrication, deisgn, etc?

You just reminded me I have a 6S project way overdue LOL. How's that for efficiency?

Efficiency can be done several ways. But it depends on the function. You can compare labor hours on a project per a known standard. Other metrics can be the accomplishment of goals, training hours, volunteer hours, leadership development, it goes on and on

We are a truck inspection and modification center. We inspect and repair new trucks coming off an assy line as well as install customer specified modifications. I'm not talking your every day F150. We build severe service trucks.

Each one coming off the line has a different set of problems and our customers vary greatly from large construction companys to the US military.

Don't you have a Blackbelt you can bounce stuff like this off of? One that already understands your processes?

In that business it seems to me that you would utilize post production info/data to determine....do you have any sort of survey process and/or visibility to these trucks after they have left your center? To determine if inspection points were missed and/or modifications performed properly?

Each truck model has a highlighted list of inspection points from previous quality concerns. Any customer feedback is minimal and rarely makes it to the shop floors unless it's safety critical.

I'm in my 3rd month of employment at this company and I see so many things that could be improved.

Seems like certain changes can be categorized as certain types of work. Example, Radio installation or 10-point inspection. Even though the items installed/inspected can vary greatly, there'll be some bell curve the data would fall into. Or you can maybe do a PERT time estimation on the tasks?
