  • Piano or Guitar lessons, N FTW/Keller?

Yes, I know we have a music forum, but not everyone checks there.

I've always wanted to play both of these instruments, and I've often heard that piano will give you the music theory and make most instruments easier to play. Anyone on here or your family member teach piano or guitar? Do you know of anyone in the Fort Worth area that you could recommend for an adult with no prior music experience?

What is generally a good rate? I have only found one person close to me on Craigslist that doesn't work for a music shop (for piano lessons). Would an individual be a better option, or should I go with someone affiliated with a music shop? I know youtube has a ton of videos, but I'd like to take some lessons and learn theory without having to go buy a keyboard or piano yet.

    Thanks in advance.

I taught myself how to play the Ukulele from youtube. I guess guitar shouldn't be much harder to learn. Then again, everyone is different. I started in elementary school with woodwinds.

I did learn piano before guitar and I could see how it gives you the advantage to pick up guitar quicker. However, I wouldn't waste your energy or money learning an instrument just to learn another.

I've been playing guitar for about 15 years. The lessons on YouTube are just as effective as any private lesson you're going to get so I wouldn't waste money on lessons. Have you purchased a guitar yet? What are you more interested in playing electric or acoustic? I recommend learning on acoustic, it's really forgiving as opposed to the electric which picks up every mistake you make.

I have a cheap acoustic that my brother bought me. I never had home internet before ~6 months ago, so youtube is just now becoming an option for the guitar. Sorry for any vagueness, but piano is my first choice of instrument, and one I've always wanted to learn. If I don't find a good piano teacher soon, I guess I'll start to study theory and check out the guitar for beginner videos.

The people that started HEB preschool and dance just opened a Keller site as well. Billy (one of the owners-it's him and his wife) teaches guitar and piano and he's a really nice guy. I can't remember his rate, but I'm thinking it was like $15 a week for a one hour session or something like that.

Give them a call if you're interested. He works at the preschool part time and does private lessons part time. If you don't like/use him, you can always call the band department at the local high schools and junior highs and get a few names for people that offer private lessons.

I'll see if my next door neighbor has time. He has a small music school in the NRH/Keller area.
