  • trailer tires on a car?

Before the flaming starts, hear me out.

I recently bought an Ford Festiva, and the balljoints were worn to the point that it ate the inside edge of the front tires to the belts. Repairing the suspension is no issue, but I am having one hell of a time finding tires, and buying them online is a joke, nearly over $60 per tire plus shipping for 145r12 tires. The same size in a 6 ply trailer tire is much cheaper and easy to find locally. If I bought them, they would go on the rear of the car.

I know why it is a bad choice to use passenger car tires on a trailer, but what about the opposite?

I didn't even think about that. I guess I have no choice but to pony up cash for tires that will be on it for just a few weeks until I find the wheels I want.

                  145r12, basically 145/80-12.

                  Non-existent in that size.

I think my best bet is Tirerack at $49 each + tax and shipping.

Tires Easy has them for about $51.50 shipped, no tax.

$41 each plus shipping. Click on the "calculate shipping" tab and let me know what it is.

Use to be quite a few cars using those tiny tires. I didn't know they were so hard to find. Can you not go with another size?

I remember a Subaru Justy would only fit one size tire something like that. It had not tolerance for any other size on a factory rim.

I wonder what its like for old -school Mini owners. I think they are 10 or 11" rims.

The fronts will clear larger/wider wheels and tires without much issue, but the rear has the spring bucket on the strut that basically wraps around the top of the tire, on my last Festiva I had to modify the Konis I put on the rear to clear 15's and 195/55-15 tires but cutting the coil springs then raising the spring bucket on the struts. It is a bit un-nerving to grind the welds off a nitrogen charged strut.

Did you check shipping? I've used this seller before, and would use again.

I might that route, but have used Tirerack a few times, plus they ship out from Shreveport about 50 miles away. I'm just cheap and hate to pay $100 for two tires that might get 50 miles put on them before getting changed. I already have a set of new 185/60-13's to put on it, just got to find the wheels I want in the stock 4x4.5 bolt pattern.
