  • Need a trailer

    Hi gang,

I am looking for a trailer. Turning the Lotus Elise into a trailer queen. I need your recommendations. Just something small, one car, and a cargo box. Towing with a basic F-150, bumper pull. Anyone have a lead on one or know where to get a good one for a decent price? Budget around $2500. Thanks in advance.

I would recommend putting in a receiver hitch under the bumper rather than just bumper pulling.... Just a piece of mind if I'm pulling a car.

This. I think most bumpers are rated at 500# tongue and 2000# total.
As far as the trailer goes, how big of a box do you need, are you just planning on putting tires and some small tools in it?

The trailers are referred to as bumper pull vs gooseneck/5th wheel hitch. But I would agree with using a receiver over the actual bumper.

Yes get a receiver hitch installed. Dodge is the only one left with a decent bumper setup left from the factory as the others are just held up with 4 bolts. Ask me how I know.

Purpose of the tow? Autocross, HPDE, full weekend races, or just touring? The right box/trailer combo could/would make a huge difference depending upon the need. For example; Just running a quick AX day, no real need for spare tires. A full out race weekend, well, now you may want more room for spares. Touring? Perhaps something covered for the random hail storm or vandals. If I had the perfect exposed race car trailer it would be something with a triangular box up front with a front end guard to keep from trashing the windshield. A combo of something like this...

Note the all aluminum construction, removable fenders, spare tire rack, tongue mounted tool box, front end cover, built in D-ring tie downs, semi-enclosed fuel bottle container, all with quite the low profile.

Personally, if I had the funds, I'd go a step further and modify the floor with cut outs and dzus fasteners allowing me access to the drive train and maybe some trailer brakes, assuming the cargo/tow rig, wasn't a good match. (I realize this may not apply to your situation. )

Just my 2¢. Post up what you decide on.

I love this Maxey, air bags drop it to the ground, no ramps needed, winch, rock guard, 7k lb axles.

That's badass, but not close to $2500 I bet

You could pay a little more and get a decent enclosed possibly

Ok, that's kinda badass. Nix the front end cover, add a small box and two row tire rack and that would suit my needs perfectly.

No I knew that.... Just wasn't thinking at the moment and had a feeling it would be on the bumper instead of a receiver.

What ballpark figure is that around?
