I'd take $45k a year for 9 months of work. Not taking anything away from the importance of a good teacher, but sounds like a great deal if teaching is something you like to do.

It's that mindset that got us in the clusterfuck that the school system is in. When the economy started tanking, every Joe Blow that got laid off figured 'Oh, anyone can teach and they have job security. I think I'll do that'. Then as soon as they get into it, they realize it's not the same as the corporate world. It's completely different. But they can't find anything else to do, no one else is hiring, so they stay. Miserable with their job and horrible at teaching. If they weeded these people out, our kids would be getting a much better education.

Don't take this wrong-I'm sure that's not what you meant, it was just something I thought needed mentioning...Also-I know there are a ton of old, blue-haired statues in the classroom just waiting for their 30 years to gtfo that should have retired 20 years ago. /rant off

That and those "9 months" if you are a true teacher is lots of fucking hours and weekends. True, you can come in and just work from 7:30 to 3:15 or whatever, but a real teacher starts at 6:00 and ends at 9:00pm on weekdays, and works 5-6 hours saturday and sunday if not more. Not to mention all the supplies the teacher must by on her own.

No way a teacher works 6am to 9pm daily. These over dramatizations give teachers a drama queen badge. I respect a lot of the teachers I had and am thankful for them...but it's not neuroscience.

No doubt they work hard, and those involved in sports and competitive acedemics work even harder, but pay is based on supply and demand. Start graduating less teachers...err certifying...and maybe you will get more pay. But it's a job that isn't particularly hard to get into.

My wife does pretty much on a daily basis. Gets there at 6, leaves at 6, comes home and eats and usually watches an hour of tv with me, then replies to parents via email/phone at home before she goes to bed at 9.

On any given weekend she can work 5 hours+. This past weekend she was at her school from 5:30 am until 6 Saturday and Sunday night doing UIL.

She also has to supply all her own paper, printer ink, markers, etc. She works at a title one school so most kids don't even bring pencils. So she(or better me) has to provide even basic supplies for the students.

There are times I've debated to tell her to quit just so i can see her...

And you would be full of it. My wife comes home, grades papers, makes lesson plans and still has to find time to make me a sammich. Then there are the classes they have to go through during the summer and getting ready for the new school year. Realistically, a teaching job is a 11 month job if you are worth anything as a teacher. Also, they rotate morning duty, which means they have to get to school even earlier on some days. Also teachers average around 40k a year, that isn't squat with a bachelors degree.

It's about what the bachelors degree is in first of all. Its the same reason music, art, sociology, history and other random degrees don't make a lot.

And second, coming home to return emails isn't the same as 14 hours non stop. I have several teacher friends...and none of them work 14 hour days, or 12...maybe 10 when they have a lot to grade. But not nightly...

My wife might be a special case as she is a team leader and teaches three levels of a class. Retards, advanced retards, and dual HS/College credit retards.
