Back in the summer of '06 I did a backpacking trip around Europe for about 6 weeks.

All I really planned was that I was going to fly into London on X date and fly out of London on X date. Past that, I got one of those month long Eurorail train passes, got some ideas of places I'd like to visit, and jumped on trains and figured it out.

I'd usually decide where I wanted to go the day before I actually went there, would call ahead for reservations at a hotel or hostel, and figure out what train I needed to catch. All I had was a hiking pack of clothes and toiletries, a series of maps, and a Frommer's guide.

I really want to go back and hit up all the places I didn't get to, but when I did it I had very few responsibilities which made it much easier to do whatever the fuck I wanted. I don't foresee being able to do it again anytime in my near future

i went to london this year and it was my first overseas trip. anything guided is going to take away from the whole point. there is too much history and too much to culture to narrow it down to a guide tour. just get over there and fly by the seat of your pants and you wil be thank ful you did. fwiw we made it to stongehinge to visit the ancient site, had beers in salisbury and visited the cathedral, got lost in london wondering the streets at 5 am drunker than hell, plus took in as much of london as possible all in 3 days. the most fun ive ever had

Being a grown up sucks diseased cock. On the flipside, it looks like I'm about to have a whole hell of a lot of free time, so I might get to try out a couple of things I've always wanted to do. Anything in particular you thought was a must see, other than the obvious?
