    Corrections officer charged in assault on inmate

    A former Travis County corrections officer has been arrested and charged with improper sexual activity with a person in custody.

    The victim, an inmate charged with family violence assault, reported the Aug. 1 jail incident to officials Sunday, according to an arrest affidavit.

    The 21-year-old inmate told deputies that Benjamin Arriola, 23, came into his cell and sexually assaulted him, the affidavit said. It said surveillance video showed the corrections officer walking into the inmate's cell at the same date and time as the victim reported.

    Arriola was hired by the Travis County sheriff's office in May 2008, spokesman Roger Wade said.

    Wade said officials do not believe there are any more victims. He said he did not have Arriola's personnel file.

    Deputies questioned Arriola on Monday, and on Tuesday he was fired from the sheriff's office, Wade said. Arriola faces up to two years in a state jail if convicted and remained in the Travis County Jail on Tuesday with bail set at $15,000.
