I drove my brother in law's '11 GT and at first I was driving easy and went through all the gears.

Exactly how does it work... will it keep the owner from shifting to 2nd... in otherwards.. it should feel as if you are fighting the shifter right?

It depends on how you shift/are shifting. Sometimes I can tell that it's locked out 2nd gear if I'm trying to shift more quickly than normal. Other times it just slides over into 4th with little effort. I did notice, that when it forces you to go to 4th, the screen below the Tach will flash a message like "1st-4th for optimal fuel economy"... It only lasts about 1/2 a second...

Feds launch Mustang transmission probe after Jalopnik, forum storiesEarlier this year we told you about a rising number of Ford Mustang owners complaining of faulty manual transmissions that Ford can't seem to fix. Now U.S. safety regulators have opened a defect probe into 26,000 cars.

As MustangDaily noted, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Sunday it was opening the probe based on 32 complaints to the agency about the MT82 transmissions built by a Ford-Getrag joint venture in China. NHTSA has been interviewing some of those who complained, and was worried enough to launch an investigation:

Some reports allege incidents occurred while merging into high speed traffic and others allege that incidents occurred while turning left across oncoming traffic. Some complainants allege that the erratic shifting behavior almost caused a collision with adjacent vehicles.

No crashes or injuries have been reported to NHTSA from the transmissions.

While a NHTSA preliminary investigation won't automatically lead to a recall, it will force Ford to tell NHTSA how widespread the problem is, and what steps if any Ford may have taken to tackle it. One insider gave us a possible explanation blaming Ford's efforts to save money by using an older design of Getrag transmission. That design had a drawback - a gear rattle, which Ford engineers quieted by requiring a thicker transmission fluid.

Except the thicker fluid causes some of the gears to slip, creating extra wear and missed or notchy shifting. On top of those problems, some of the bolts holding the clutch can loosen because Ford didn't specify bolt thread locker. Ford has switched back to a different transmission fluid, but that makes the rattle come back.

While Ford has said it was working with customers, some Mustang owners have been told by Ford that noisy or notchy shifting is just how the transmissions are supposed to work. That's one way to fix the problem.

Why would you be shifting at 2500 RPMS if you are merging into high speed traffic or turning across traffic? Some people are just retards and don't know how to drive a manual trans vehicle...

It can catch you off guard sometimes and when seconds count you could be in deep shit.

What happened when you were younger and gassed on your RWD car with roughly 400hp while turning left in 1st?

The quickest way to remedy it a squirrely ass end is to short shift second.

DISCLAIMER!!! ----- This is with younger/inexperienced drivers.

Agreed, but, the younger/inexperienced drivers usually don't have the will/time/ambition to make complaints to the NHTSA blaming a transmission for their inability to drive...

Also, all the mustangs have Traction Control and Stability Contol. So, unless they held the brake and held the traction control button for 7 seconds, then there is no chance the ass end will get squirrely....

HAHA, no shit. At least buy one before you bitch!

IMO you're over analizing (yes, I spelled it this way for a reason) things. I've owned an 05GT & 09GT, both were great and I had zero probelems with them, you've been here long enough to know that I have owned them all (Mustangs) and the 2012 GT is by far the best car I have owned. Great MPG, horsepower, comfort and most important reliability. Go get one and imo get an auto, unless it is going to be just a garage queen or weekend car, theres to much damn traffic around here for a 6speed manual. Just look at my other thread, Manny ran 11.7 with an Auto and just a few mods (no NOS or blower/turbo), I will find it hard to find another mfg. that can claim that.

Well that's all the proof I need the new 5.0 is a good car. It has lasted two months and 2,000 miles and no problems.
