Later this month i'm taking a 6-7 day road trip to Colorado. I haven't taken a vacation in a few years and could use some time to relax and enjoy some cool sites. I'm going by myself, so i'd like to stay on the road and see as much as I can. I've never been to Colorado, so I'm looking for some ideas on where I should go and what I should do. The main reason I'm going is largely to see the sites, and do a little hiking. I'm wanting to keep the trip on a reasonable budget. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

wow, there is not enough time to do this. I just drove Ft Worth to Clayton, NM last night, came on into Denver today. deliver in Cheyenne tomorrow then to Durango, CO.
Ill try and cliff note stuff to do (although ill miss about 100 things) later tonight for you.
One thing I will say is I prefer turning west in Four Way, Tx off 287 vs. going into Dumas, Tx and taking 354 west- I really like that scenery change and the fact you can haul ass.
Between Texline, Tx and Raton, NM there are at least 5 historical and scenic markers telling the history of the land, I really enjoy stopping at those and learning about the history of the place.
Also in Trinidad take hwy 12 west, the loop wrap you into La Veta, CO then back to Walsenberg if you want to continue north. I love that mini-loop, the elevation change, scenery and historical markers.
If you turn west on 160 vs. going back to Walsenberg you can over La Veta Pass and into Fort Garland. Continue heading west and you can go to the Great Sand Dunes Natl Park. Not really a single guy place to go, but if you have a fam or girl that likes that stuff, cool place to check out.
Tomorrow Im taking 285 south out of Denver and will spend 2 nights in South Fork to relax, ill report back on that route as Ive never been on it but by google maps it looks pretty sweet.
Another thing, I really like hwy 149 South Fork to Lake City. Awesome scenery and really enjoy that area, I could live there.
If you like exploring and stuff, 4x4ing and just getting up in God's country google map this and go here: 37.769222,-107.361846
I went there last time and the views and landscape was unreal, next time (not this week) im going to bring a 4 wheeler up here and take that road all the way over to Silverton, Co.
12 miles west of Canon City is the Royal Gorge, cool if you have never seen it, Pikes Peak west of Colorado Springs.
Strychnine has a badass list of breweries to hit up that is on my list to do next time in here as well.
I swear I could spend ten years up here and never see all of it.Last edited by SMKR; 08-08-2011, 08:14 PM.

We always stay in one of the cabins here... http://riverbend-resort.com/
Little Red is one of my favorites, but they have several others to choose from as well. South Fork is exactly a 12-hour drive from Fort Worth....we normally home base there at River-Bend and then stray from there to Creede, Mountain City, and over towards Pagosa Springs...lots to see and do out there and best if you have a Jeep or ATV to enjoy the trails and visit some of the ghost towns.70' Chevelle RagTop
