  • any Dirt Track guys here? thinking about getting into it

So I've been kicking this around for a while.. I've been involved with drag racing for over 15 years now, and been into rock crawling, bagged trucks, lifted trucks, show cars, blah blah blah. i'm burnt out on drag racing and looking to do something different. My friends have been tryin to talk me into gettin a dirt track car. they're recommending that i get an IMCA hobby stock? car because they're cheap and easy to drive and resell when im ready to move up. Personally, out of all the cars that i've seen on the track, the ones that really appeal to me are the mini sprints and the dwarf cars. I like how they use sportbike motors as i'm real familiar with those, and I imagine especially the 1,000cc cars have got to just haul major ass around the track. What would you guys recommend? my buddies dont really know anything about the mini sprints so they didnt have any input for me. It'd be easier for me to haul a mini sprint operation around with our Rubicon Unlimited, where with a hobby stock i'd have to get another truck or something. what do you guys think?

dwarf cars are basically the same thing as mini sprints, right? just based off a 30s bodystyle car instead of a sprint car. I know i've seen way more dwarf car races then mini sprints, would that be a better deal to get into? I think i've made up my mind to get into a mini type car, I really am not set up to deal with a fullsize car, my rubicon on 37s would never pull a 5-6k total LBS trailer with car on it. And i've got a little kid and a wife that might get interested so hell they might end up racing the mini later on if i get into fullsize stuff. I just need to figure out which way i need to go as far as that goes.

Find the track you want to race at and go see what's running there. Some track's have their own rules to keep their car counts up. Some tracks run the IMCA rules and you can haul your car there. Devils bowl in Mesquite is one of the best tracks around..But their rules are a little different on some of their classes.
BTW- If you aint cheating, you aint trying. We had high dollar motors in our "street stocks"...If you didn't, you were back of the pack.

I'm not into it, but I gotta tell you the open wheel dirt cars have always given me a boner. Doesn't matter the era either, in this sport even the new cars look badass.

Just to clarify: I'm not concerned about payouts, especially at a dwarf/mini level. I think anybody getting into this to make money is seriously confused. LOL. I just want to get a taste of it to see if i like it, if i really dig it then i'd probably work on getting a truck/trailer and getting a fullsize car and doing something a little more serious. After a little research it seems that the Dwarf series got dropped from killeen and waco, the two closest tracks to me. the mini sprints still run in waco, but it seems like that'd be grossly unfair racing 15 year olds that weigh 100-120 lbs compared to my fat ass at 220lbs. LOL. i do like the look of the mini sprints, but i dunno.

It really depends on how much money you want to spend. I have been in dirt track all my life. Between my dad, and 2 uncles not to mention the numerous cousins and second uncles, my family has probably 50+ championships, and 1000+ feature wins. hobby stock would be the cheapest way to get started, the dwarf class you speak of is more referred to legends they are fun, but more so on asphalt rather then dirt. Mini sprints tend to be more high maintenance as are any other sprint classes. Not to mention they require much more driver skill to be competitive. For a novice id recommend hobby or factory stock or even mini stock. mini stock is typically fox mustangs with 2.3 4 cylinders or 80's toyota celicas with 22r 4 cylinder engines. As mentioned decide which track you would run at, and check out their rules and regulations for each class and go from there. Devils bowl use to be a super nice and smooth track, and there are a few tracks in southern oklahoma that are pretty nice, although they are older and tend to get dry slick and chew up tires, so keep that in mind..

                            Worked for me.

                            Just saying.
