It does fall under the "rec vehicles" sector I suppose. If you have good credit there will not be a problem financing them though.

If you credit is shaky...well... it could be tough.

I second the buying one used. There's plenty of them out there that ranchers/farmers etc use that dont tear em up and sell for good prices. I used to sell a ton of them when i worked at Woods Fun Center. I was never that impressed, i always wanted more power. even out of the RZR.

In other words..if you're paying cash you can go out of state, if you are financing stay in TX.
Actually not entirely true...I did do this with financing as well (on the last 2), and it was through Polaris...now it may depend on the dealer, but there are apparently several in Ok that know this game and do it all the time for Texas residents, financing or not. They simply gave me the bill of landing with everything already filled out (HSBC-Polaris as lien holder) so that I could take it to the title office myself when I got back. I took it down there and paid something like $25 for eveything, and the dealer even waived their typical documentation fee too. The TX title office gave me a receipt to use for proof of ownership and the title went directly to HSBC-Polaris...then when I paid it off about 8 mo later they mailed me the title with lien release.

It's a bit to explain but The loophole is in the type of taxes being paid....in TX they try to screw people by charging standard state sales tax same as if you were buying a T-shirt or some part for your car (remember they are considering these things a luxary classification)....so when buying in Texas the merchant is responsible for collecting tax at 8.25%, not 6.25% vehicle tax, like when you buy a car or regular motorcycle...when that dealer goes down to the title office they do not relay the amount that they collected from you to the Title office....instead, what they collect on vehicles under this classification goes up with all of their standard counter state sales tax stuff...like gear, parts, clothing, etc. The loophole in this is that Ok classifies them the same as they do all other vehicles, and if you are a Texas resident buying in Ok it's out of their hands...they aren't liable to collect state vehicle or sales tax for Texas....when you go to the TX title office they have no mechanism for collecting standard sales taxes (the 8.25% tax), they can only collect on vehicle tax (the 6.25%)...which these things aren't under.

It's a catch 22 for the state, but in the end I'm sure they still clean up by getting that extra 2% b/c there are far more people buying brand new in the state than those of us who have learned the loophole and go out of state to avoid all tax.

I buy from a place called Lakeside Polaris...they are in Wagoner Oklahoma, I cannot recommend them enough. Always been fantastic for me....real accomodating, no BS, and quoted significantly lower prices on anything that I'vecalled interested in (I thought about upgrading into a Robbie Gordon 4-seater last year and no one local could (would?) get anywhere near their price....the best part is what he tell's you over the phone is always the OTD number, it will not change once you drive up there.

It is about a 3-hr drive each way, but well worth it....if you call them talk to a guy named Jason.

Used rhinos are plenty. Far cheaper. And just as good for working and trail riding.

                        Who is SunL?

We have had our Yamaha Rhino for 2 years as a toy and got on a deer lease this year so it will get to see some action. If you want something big and more stable go with the Ranger, but for narrow or tighter trails I think the Rhino has an edge. Check out the Kawasaki Teryx they seem pretty cool too just from looking at them.

Good advice here...I'm not married to Polaris either, I've had good luck with them but there are a lot of guys out there who apparently have not. The Rhino is real popular too...a little down on power by comparison, but it makes up for it in it's size and overall layout....besides that, no matter what some guys say I think they still have plenty adequate power. My next door neighbor owns a Teryx and it is a GREAT machine....I've never been a big fan of Kawasaki overall, but those machines are well built and touch as nails! My neighbor has had 2 now, and he has traveled up to Colorado with us on a few of our mountain ATV excursions....the first one was carb'd, and it suffered bad in the altitude, was also very down on power as compared to his new one, which is fuel injected. The newer fuel injected Teryx will hang within a few lengths of my RZR up to around 50mph....and that's pretty impressive considering it's a 700cc and heavier than the 800cc RZR.

No doubt that you will find a better deal on a used one, and if you have good credit you can usually also get a loan through a credit union (Like Texans) for one of these too....just be careful buying used....most people don't buy these things just to put-put around on....but they are also built with those things in-mind....just be sure that the previous owner has kept up with all of the scheduled maintenance (especially air filters on Polaris). I consider mine pretty well cared for, but that being said....it has climbed to the top of mountains in rain, snow, mud with a load on it a number of times....has been stuck and needed winching a couple times, and it has been on it's lid twice in the past 2-years. Still a great machine tho!

For real? I thought SunL was a off brand. Shows what I know. Guess I need to get more acquainted.

Apparently not too popular. Found only 1 on craigslist. That, or they are so good that no one is letting them go.

And they still list for 11/13k new.

For what you pay for a nice UTV you can get into a very capable Jeep Wrangler which makes a lot more sense for hunting or ranch work. I found UTV's to not work good for my application, beat the piss out of your kidneys and you're always short on space.

As for the rhino's and teryx... the Rhino is good for budget, but the Teryx has a lot more power and a much higher top speed.
