Now, if the design is really horrible, or they just select a butterfly tattoo out of the book, I totally understand.

I said artist, not some limp dick with a tattoo "gun". You go to a tattoo artist because of their skill, basically comissioning them to do the work on you. Not like they are not going to work with you, and if your design looks decent they may work off it, but most brought in designs are a starting point only for reference, but also realize most look like shit. Tattoo artist get business by referrals based off their work. If they did your shitty design because you like it then their name is on that FOREVER as a walking billboard of shit.
Leah, I know quite a few shop owners and artists. If you want me to point you in any direction just hit me up....

I'm biased, but i think Sneke Rone over at AE in Dallas did awesome work on my back piece which was total freehand. I think the best advice I could share would be to find an artist who does the work and style you like, give them some inspiration and let them stretch their artistic ability to come up with something unique.

So, let me ask you 'veteran' guys this: What is the preferred method here: Talk to one guy at a time? Ask several to work on it and see which one I end up liking? What is the etiquette if I don't like what they come up with? Like, if I like something, but want to tweak it a little, will they get offended? Or what if I don't like it at all-do I just not call them back, tell them, what?
That's one of the main reasons I hadn't pursued this before-just kind of intimidating and I don't want to insult anyone. lolToken Split Tail

Tell him what you want, some will want a deposit, others won't. Let him draw it up, then schedule a time to come back and look at it, if you want something changed, let him know, if it's major, come back another time and repeat. Once you're happy with the work, most will tattoo you that day or schedule you an appointment if they don't have time that day.
Remember, it's your body, don't put anything on your body that you aren't 100 percent happy with, just to make the artist happy. You are paying, and you are the canvas to show his work, so you definitely get your say

take a style you like, hell take other work, and say, something like, this is what I like, but I want you to put your spin on it.
if after a few tries the artist doesn't get what you want, just say, that you appreciate the work, but you two obviously are having artistic differences, and you think you'd like someone else to work on it. He may offer another artist in the same shop, or say KTHNXBI
