I don't think taking the hardass approach means you were abused as a kid. I think that's a pretty ridiculous assumption to make, actually. I'm a hardass, strict, etc because its what I know. I wasn't "abused" as a kid. I got ass whippings that were well deserved. I raise my kids the same way. You screw up, you know punishment is coming. Not necessarily in the form of a spanking, either. I much prefer military style punishment. But if I can have a talk, and correct the problem, that's always my first choice. Every kid responds differently. Every parent parents differently. Some kids don't respond to spankings, just like some kids don't respond to talks. No one style is right for every parent, or every child.

Simply put, those that agree the boy should have responsibility for this were more than likely also raised that if you're told to do something you'd better damn well do it. After you've been given that responsibility, you'd better not have to be told to do it again or it's your ass.
