    ABSOLUTELY

This is a HUGE lesson to be learned about following instructions to the letter. Bad things can happen when we don't, and the ones we love are usually the ones that suffer just like little Jasper did.

There is a way you and Mandy can have this conversation with him without it going horribly wrong. He needs to understand his role in this, but not feel solely responsible and that's what children tend to do a lot. They don't put things in percentages. In their minds it's 100% all or none....and that's the one thing you don't want him doing, which is taking 100% of the blame.

      • Well I am really proud of the kid. His Pop & his Nana called to console him & he took full responsibility for Jasper & you could see he wanted to cry over the phone while talking to them. But he just let his eyes fill up with tears & kept his composure.

Well wish me luck digging. I hope the soil is soft under the first foot. Cause its rock hard out in Kaufman & this county is a Sandy soil area

EDIT! thanks for the tag to whoever put it at the bottom super dad. From the first 30 posts of this thread I thought I would have got hung by some of the members on this board with their reading skills & lack of paying attn

        • I understand he's 11 years old, I and everyone else on this board was 11 years old. If my father told me to give water to the dog, it was my ass. EVEN if no one told me to give water to the dog - it was my ass. I completely disagree with everyone trying to absolve the young kid of all responsibility. Like Elvis said - excellent opportunity to learn.

            • The mother is the one who failed in this situation. The kid is partially responsible but the mother let the dog die.

              • SEB - You probably would benefit greatly from a San Angelo bar, they are long steel spikes to break up ground. Essential in dry texas soil/clay. You can get them at Lowes or home depot for like $24 bucks.

that is why i went and bought a kiddie pool for the summer. the dog never runs out of water, can cool off if to hot etc etc.
if the kid loved the dog, i think he will receive his own punishment by burying the dog. if he has the o well attitude, then i would jump his ass.
at 9 years old it's hard to put responsibility on kid for anything other than their actions. JMO

I think a kiddie pool would have been the best answer to this whole problem. My dog lives with my neighbors two German Sheppards & they all lay in the kiddie pool together when its hot & then go dig holes under the porch & lay in them to stay cool.

                    • I think I would have him help bury the dog. I wouldn't yell at him or berate him, just you and him taking care of what needs to be done. It sounds like he knows he made a mistake and he has suffered the consequences. The burying won't be fun, its just the work that needs to be done to take care of his dog for the last time. As long as you aren't whipping him while you are doing it I don't think it would be cruel at all.

SEB you sound like a stand up guy. It sucks that the boy has to go through this but he will be a better man for it. He's lucky to have somebody stepping up and trying to teach him a lesson the right way. Sounds like he doesn't get many chances to be taught how to be a man, this is a good one.

                        • I am fucking amazed at some people I considered to have a good head on their shoulders. I hope a lot of you don't have kids. And i know some of you do. My kid will be footing the tax bill for your irresponsible children. Lovely. Let me say a sarcastic thank you on his behalf.

Not old enough to have a dog? Be responsible for a pet? At fucking 9? Much less 11? He doesn't need to know it's his fault? Kim, are you high? I was castrating bulls at 7. Killing cattle, chickens, other livestock, etc. Nine is plenty old. Much less 11.

If this was me in this situation, I'd whip his ass. He'd be digging the hole, he'd be burying the dog in the hole with no gloves. And hed know damn well the dog dying was HIS fault. Fuck playing pass the buck. Yes, you both share some responsibility as the child's parents. But if you let him think or one second, that it wasnt his fault, its a wasted opportunity to teach responsiility. And all youllget from that point on is the blame game. That teacher just didnt like me, i forgot, its Jimmy's fault, etc. Shut up, suck it up, an sack up. The kid is about to hit his teenage years. You best teach him while you can. His mother and I would cease our relationship, because she sounds like a lazy irresponsible bitch. I never would have been in this situation to begin with.

I have yet to read through entirely, but I'm throwing in my two cents. Brachycephalic dogs should NEVER be left out in heat, water or no water. By default, they are more susceptible to heatstroke.
He very well could have provided water to the Jasper, which he drank. If Peyton's mom said, 'Make sure Jasper has water,' it's not inconceivable that Peyton looked at the bowl, saw an inch of water in the bottom, and assumed, with an 11 year old's comprehension, that Jasper had water.

The first opportunity for parenting was to explain to Peyton that excessive heat can be deadly, very quickly, and in addition to making sure his water bowl stayed filled, he needed to check on him often and tell his mom if Jasper started acting weird.
The common sense route was to bring the dog in, regardless of being an outdoor dog or not, but that's a moot point, now.

Since the dog is now dead, rather rubbing the kid's nose in the dog's corpse, take the time to explain the dangers of excessive heat, WITHOUT PLACING BLAME ON THE KID. Then, chastise his mother for being irresponsible in pet ownership, and if she ever mentions getting a replacement dog, intervene.

Going back to your comment about the former Boston's death being Peyton's fault, can you really fault a then 6 year old for not being in control of a dog? A 6 year old is rarely a dominant master. That dog died from lack of training or by consequences of his own free will. you cannot blame the kid for that, nor can you continue to hold it against him.
