  • How would you handle this

Well my daughters stepbrother Peyton is 9 years old & its his job to take care of their dog (JASPER), Yesterday I noticed he was at the door barking & barking. I told Peyton, Make sure to go out there & give that dog water in this heat & go check on him every couple hours. I brought my dog Buttkiss inside cause its hot. I told their mother that they should think about bringing him in and keeping him in his cage during the hot part of the day.

Well this morning I wake up & walk outside to have my morning coffee cause the sun is on the front side of their house & shady in the back. Well I find Jasper deceased laying right by the back door. Poor little guy was loyal right to the end. Well I go to check his water bowl & its completely empty, Also noted it wasn't tipped over. It was the way it should be,

My question is I want Peyton to understand the responsibility of animals & that they are living breathing creatures & not just toys. I am not certain if he passed from heat or maybe he didnt have enough water. I know this is going to be a moment that he remembers for the rest of his life. But it appears he wasn't given water at all yesterday while I was gone. I don't know if I should scold Peyton or console him.

I would beat his ass, make him dig the hole to bury the thing and make damn sure he knew it was his fault that dog died.

9 years old, he is not a baby anymore. He had a responsibility and because he acted in a selfish manner the dog died. I would drive that point home. On a side note in 108* weather the dog should be brought in regardless IMO.

do NOT put this on that child no matter what.... he's fucking NINE man....

Yes you told him, but ultimately YOU are responsible for everything living and breathing in that home...not a child. YOU should have made sure the dog was being taken care of properly.

^^ This. Make him bury the dog. He needs to know what he did was wrong..... Can't you actually get into serious trouble for neglecting a dog like that?

I leave my dogs outside during the morning but by noon I have them inside the house even though their bred to work in the high Texas heat they need plenty of water.

my daughter is 10 and her responsibility is taking care of the dog (feeding, picking up after etc.) buti have to keep reminder her every day to do it.
that is why i went and bought a kiddie pool for the summer. the dog never runs out of water, can cool off if to hot etc etc.
if the kid loved the dog, i think he will receive his own punishment by burying the dog. if he has the o well attitude, then i would jump his ass.
at 9 years old it's hard to put responsibility on kid for anything other than their actions. JMO

He doesn't need to think for ONE MINUTE that this death was his fault. He's old enough to start learning about responsibility, but not old enough to be solely responsible for another living/breathing creature. That's YOUR job

Put Peyton in the Box of Shame for 2 days with no water.
I think his point is that the fish got low balled, fucked in the catfish asshole and you paid half price. The worst part was the fish explaining to his fish friends why his asshole smelled like redneck

x2, I was tempted to say this exact same thing. Very sad that this dog died in what I imagine to be a terrible way.

This is a situation where it is really everyones fault. The kid should have given the dog water, but the adults should have been checking on this. Everyone needs to go outside and start digging.

Seriously, it will be a somber moment that everyone will remember, the kid especially.

I buried a few dogs as a kid, and it wasn't even my fault. I remember each one of the circumstances to this day.
