The couple that I watched showed how there was 10-12 different 'designs' put into the lay-out of the first 20-30 that they had captured, and as time progressed the different designs all faded away, until now there are just two basic designs being used. The didn't say anything about have russian engineers around, but that these designs are basically passed from builder to builder, and that nothing is ever exact. One of those reasons is because they are using wood cut and molded from local native trees, and fiberglass cut with resin mixed on the spot, using no molds or patterns.

Anyways, they are building these with materials gathered locally and with just what can be sneaked in at night or under cover.

As far as it sinking, they are scuttled once the subs reach the spot where they offload, they are made to be a one-time only deal. They have what is basically large ball vales inside that when opened flood the inside.

As far as this one sinking, the hatches on the top of most of these are bolted down, if opened at sea then waves can quickly wash over into the hatch, since the tops of these things are only about 12"- 18" out of the water, and they do not have much buoyancy, it wouldn't take much water to flood one.

the "cocaine sub hunt" documentary mentioned some of that stuff...they said that they've only heard of the full subs, and they've yet to actually encounter one. they said that the semi-subs were based on just a few basic designs...the one that they actually found, during the documentary, was actrually a newer design, that was a lot different than what they had previously found. they actually showed a shot of some russian blue prints, if i remember correctly... this one actually had a toilet on board, enough room to stand, etc. the others had almost no room, the passengers were shoulder to shoulder, there wasn't enough room to stand, they were badly ventilated, etc.
