Glad to see the VA Fish and Game service did the right thing for this family...they should give the girl and family some sort of commendation or something for doing the right thing.
Common sense should be listed on an Endangered list....I work in retail and I have to facepalm myself at least 3 times a day with the lack of common sense that people display on day to day basis.
You people can't have it both ways - the fines she pays will help reduce our debt. The time she spends in Federal-pound-me-in-the-ass prison will serve as a deterrent to others who feel like "helping" wildlife.
and cost us more than the $535 she paid increasing our debt. lol.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service says that the mother who got mailed a $535 fine after her daughter saved a woodpecker and transported it, a potential violation of federal law meant to protect migr…
On June 13, a special agent with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service observed a woman carrying a cage that contained a woodpecker at a home improvement store in Fredericksburg Virg.
As possession of a bird may potentially violate the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the agent initiated an inquiry to determine whether a potential violation had occurred.
Upon speaking with the subject, later identified as Alison Capo, on June 27, the agent determined that no further action was warranted. A citation that had been previously drafted by the agent was cancelled on June 28.
Unfortunately, the citation was processed unintentionally despite our office's request to cancel the ticket. The Service has contacted Ms. Capo to express our regret. The Service is also sending Ms. Capo a formal letter explain the clerical error and confirming that ticket should never have been issued.
This misunderstanding was the result of a Service inquiry into possible violations of federal wildlife law. In particular the Service is responsible for the protection of all federally listed migratory birds. The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries did not participate in the inquiry.

sounds like an "oh shit it went public" story. they probably meant to give her the ticket and just didn't realize that it would make them look like asses in the public's eye and this is their way of "saving face"

Can we get that woodpecker to land over here in Benbrook where they are planning on building the mall half a damned mile from my house? Any other engandered species that can be convinced to move in?
My farm borders a federal wildlife refuge. They do not fuck around. When the whooping cranes migrate they shut down the whole 11,000 plus acre refuge down. Block all the roads leading to the lake.
The funny thing is they do a lot of shit that us farmers could never dream of getting away with. As far as chemical spraying close to a open water source. Controlled burns during pheasant breeding time.
Hell you used to be able to camp and fish the whole lake. Now there is no camping, no fires, no parking on any grass, and you can only fish 1/3 of the lake.
So I just received like a 3 paragraph thank you/apology email reply from the comment I sent in to the contact us deal. It was inline with the release they showed. Pretty funny I thought. It said they're trying to contact the family and apologize. Funny how quickly they contacted them with a citation.
