  • ETX officer disciplined in death of K-9

Okay, tell me if this isn't proof of the double standard. The dog was left in a locked patrol car for four hours in 100+ degree heat and was found dead by another officer.

GREENVILLE, TX (KLTV) - Greenville Police say Officer Jeff Gore has been disciplined in the death of K-9 bloodhound, Liberty.

Liberty died inside a patrol car on June 29.

Officer Gore has been given the maximum discipline without termination, a 15-day suspension, without pay.

The Hunt County District Attorney Joel Littlefield declined prosecution of the case because the officer's actions did not constitute a crime.

Greenville Police Chief Dan Busken says, "The loss of Liberty is a tragedy for the Greenville Police Department and for the community. A thorough investigation was conducted and the case was turned over to the Hunt County Attorney for review. The County Attorney did not find evidence that indicated that Officer Gore acted recklessly. based on the internal review of the case, it was determined that the officer should be disciplined. His actions were not intentional, but he is being held accountable and responsible for what happened."
If a 'civilian' left an animal in a hot car and it died, it would mean a cruelty to an animal charge, Class A misdemeanor, a year in jail. If the same civilian kills a police dog under the same or similar circumstances, it is interference of a police service animal, a state jail felony, two years in jail.

If an officer with 11 years experience with a K-9 unit does it, it is a two week non-payed vacation.

Officers are subject to the same punishment of Joe Q. Public. Double standards don't exist.

    and....

We don't know the whole story.

That's fucking bullshit. I have no idea how someone could leave a living thing in this fucking heat for more then fucking 5 minutes let alone 4 god damn hours. I have no problems with cops, hell I'm going to become one here in the next year or so. But this mother fucker... FUCK.

Sorry I'm a dog lover... and this sent me into a fucking rage.

Gore was a nice guy, and I'm sure had no intention of this happening. He used to do some work at the schools around town IIRC.

That being said, yes he should face the same penalties as joe q public. Basically he killed an officer of the law, this should be no different than if a civilian killed an officer. Granted it shouldn't be murder, but at least a hefty manLaughter charge.

if a civilian kills a K9, they're guilty of killing an officer.

15 day suspension seems about even

lol...I'm siding with the mob mentality on this one. Clearly a double standard.

I'm giving Matt a hard time. Anytime a cop does something perceived as wrongdoing, Matt (aka saveapig) comes in saying "Wait a minute guys, we don't know the whole story."

all of you are confusing the culpable mental state needed for any of the obsurd charges you want. it was an accident involving a dog not a human. if it were a human then charges would be appropriate. the reason people are charged with crimes when killing k-9's is because they are trying to kill it not from an accident.

                          you guys are a trip...

So what you're saying is, when Joe Q Public does it, it's animal cruelty. When an officer does it, it's an accident? Makes perfect sense. YOU are a trip. Must be nice walking trough life knowing that badge makes you void of the littlest things, like responsibility.
