Off topic, but people look at the past through rose colored glasses.

I guess it depends on your race/sex/location. Would I trade today's negatives for yesterday's positives, sure who wouldn't, but I wouldn't trade today's society on a whole for the one from 30-50 years ago.
The cops of today are not much different than those of years gone by, just the means of proving the conduct and the speed of the communication of these acts of these crooked cops are far faster than in the days of past. None of this shit is new, everyone just hears about it and there is actually proof of it now.

I will agree to some extent.

Back then you didn't go around testing LEOs because you KNEW you would get your ass kicked and there was no large settlement to be had.

        • In a little late on this one, but I have one point that really gets to me. Say i'm out with my friends, and we see some homeless guy getting the shit beat out of him by a group of people. If we ran up, and helped the homeless guy. Just by pushing the people off of him or even fighting them, we would all be fine. If me and this same group walked up on this happening by these officers, and pushed them off or even less. We would all be arrested and charged with assault on an officer. Even if we stopped them from murdering this guy. Being on probation, I would end up in prison just for yelling at them to stop most likely. Society has no way of protecting themselves or others from police. So when a group of Leos like this decide to do something like this, there is nothing to stop them.

It's called accountability. They have none.

However, I could not stand there and watch this. This could have been stopped if people had done more than stand around and video it.

I wish that I would be able to. But it would end up in me getting in some sort of trouble, no matter what I did. My probation would be denied, and I would be shipped off to state jail for a year for saving a man's life. So I have to admit that I would do nothing, and it would kill me inside knowing that I just sat there and watched a guy get beaten to death. Even if they were found to be at fault, i would still be fucked.

Apparently 3 or 4 people watched this guy get beaten. I'm sure all of them had reasons too.

There is the right thing to do, and the convenient thing to do. They are very seldom the same.

It does seem like someone would of at least yelled something, or got close enough with the camera so the cops knew they were being taped.

                  • I guess I should've used a different picture. I didn't intend to focus it on the cops, just saying the past isn't as great as people would like to think, especially if you weren't a white male.

There were no "gold ol' days" in the fashion that they are romanticized.

Very true sir. So many people lack the courage of their convictions these days. This board is a perfect example of it at times. So many will talk a big game, but when it comes to follow through there is none.

                      • This is shitty, but can you really blame them for not doing anything?

A group of men were beating the life out of a man on the street in plain view not giving a fuck about witnesses like they're the mafia. They've proven themselves violent and their violence is above the law at the time so to speak. Or, more accurately, seemingly under protection of the law.

How many people would really step-up and try to get in the middle of that situation?

I might get 30 feet away and yell that he's had enough, but I damn sure wouldn't try to physically keep them from beating the man. If yelling at them has no effect, then what?

You could keep your distance and go home afterwards, or you could try to do what's right, get bludgeoned by a group of armed lunatics, and catch some charges in the process. Shit, you might get killed too, ya know?

                        • There is no excuse for that type of treatment by the police....also why would the family let him live on the streets...I'm sure now they are going to want to bank off of that.

                              Are you seriously kidding me?

No accountability? What do you call what is happening now? There have been at least two officers suspended and an internal investigation along with a federal investigation?

If someone would have told me there was no accountability, I would have started going ape shit on people almost 20 years ago!

Society stands by and watches every day. There are countless video examples of just that on the web.

I've read he had schizophrenia. It's not like he was just poor. I know it's getting harder and harder to involuntarily instutionalize mentally ill people now. Usually schizophrenia manifests in the later teen years, the guy was 37, can you imagine babysitting someone who has been losing their mind for ~20 years?

I'm not trying to say the family has no role here, but I doubt they had a sit-down talk and told him he was on the streets. He's probably checked himself out of mental hospitals numerous times over the years and disappeared on the streets.

I grew up with a guy who is now a schizophrenic. It's really sad, he talks in loosely understandable gibberish. At times it's complete nonsense. Other times he talks basically normal, but you know something's not right. I've been told they gravitate towards isolation, homelessness, and drug/alcohol abuse. I know they suffer from delusions and hallucinations, but that's about all I really know about the condition.

I hadn't seen this guy in 10 years. I bump into him with his mother (who doesn't really know me) and he's just gone. I had no idea this had happened. His father passed when we were in HS. I just felt so bad for his mother, she's been through so much, you could see pain and embarrassment on her face, I had no idea what to say.

As for the guy who was killed, I'm sure he was resisting, probably wasn't making sense, and could have been on drugs. Even if he wasn't he may have seemed like it. Obviously he didn't need to be beaten to death, but I imagine that's where the trouble started.
