Don't go in without a guaranteed AFSC or you'll spend the next 4 years of your life standing in front of a plane with a gun or some other bullshit job. Then, you'll get disgusted with the AF and decide to get out, only to find you are barely qualified to work at Wal-Mart. Seen it happen many times.
Not trying to be a dick, but this is a HUGE decision and I would recommend you find someone who can help you through it besides the recruiter. If you want to make the AF a career, do something that sounds enjoyable. If you have any doubts about doing your 20+ yrs, I would pick something that has a direct civilian crossover that pays well.
Just my $.02- Darrell

Just my $.02I don't like Republicans, but I really FUCKING hate Democrats.
Sex with an Asian woman is great, but 30 minutes later you're horny again.

It went well actually. There are a few documents I will have to pull regarding medical hsitory and my mothers naturalization certificate. As far as sere spec goes, that is what I want to do, bottom line. I do have to sign up for other positions and after meps, I can change it to sere spec, possibly. My buddy Sean did just that a year and a half ago, so it is possible. Although I would also like to be in-flight refueling or tacp, eventually. Those are the three main things I find interest in.

If SERE is anything like Pararescue and Combat Controller, there will be a point during basic where they give you the chance to try out for the Indoctrination program. If you make it, you move on to that training. If not, I believe you fall back to your original AFSC, which is what makes a guaranteed job even more important.
If you go in Open General or Guaranteed Electronics and you bomb out of the SERE training, you will get stuck in whateverthefuck no one else wanted. Trust me, its not a pretty picture.
I went into the AF in 96 and got out in 02, so I'm not real current but that's the way it was back in the day....
edit - My old man was a KC-135 navigator so I originally wanted to be a Boom Operator (in-flight refueler) on that same aircraft, but failed the depth perception test at MEPS. Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise. Thos guys are usually TDY 300+ days a year and there is no civilian counterpart. Again, if you are hardcore and want to make a career out it - go for it. If you have any aspirations of having a family and being a civilan - choose wisely.
Good Luck- Darrell

I went through a similar situation. Went and signed up with the Marines in the DEP, was shipping out for boot, getting ready to sign my contract and I looked it over with a fine tooth comb, scored a 92 on the ASVAB, was going into the 2600 fields (they don't get more specific than that before you head to boot, as to which particular 2600 you'll get) Recruiter told me I was all set up and ready to go. Get to MEPS to ship for boot, the guy at MEPS hands me an open contract. I said I wasn't going to sign an open contract, and I never ended up shipping.
Moral of the story: What your recruiter says doesn't mean dick. If it's not on paper, it ain't happening.
