Lawnmower Question

I've got a decent little John Deere self-propelled mower that I got a few years back at Lowes for around $350. It's been running great with no issues, until I ran over a fresh tree stump that apparently was a little taller than it looked. The motor came to a pretty quick stop, and now it won't re-start. It always started on the first pull.

I flipped it over and didn't see any obvious sign of damage, but I'm wondering what the hell I did to it?? Could it have bent the crankshaft?

you can still pull it ok, right? Plug wire pop off? Not much you can hurt there. We had an old mower with a badly bent shaft that still worked for years. It would shake the ticks right off ya.

If it's like an old Briggs & Stratton, u probably sheared the key. Its not hard to find and fix.

Yeah, it pulls and turns over fine, no problem. Just doesn't start.

What is the key that was mentioned? I don't know shit about these little motors, but I hear that they're not all that hard to work on.

duh, forgot all about the key. You'll have to take the top off the motor and remove the starter clutch and spin off the flywheel nut. The flywheel key is made of aluminum and is designed to shear when you hit something like that. Basically it throws the timing off. The key is really inexpensive. Check around hardware stores or lawn mower repair places.
